What is the sin of the world?

When John the Baptist saw Jesus, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29). Often this is misquoted as the “sins of the world”, implying the plurality of “sin” and the comprehensiveness of God’s Salvation that comes by belief in Jesus Christ. There is absolutely no doubt that the blood of Jesus Christ was shed for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38; Acts 10:43; Hebrews 9:22) and there is no sin that is beyond the grace of God, except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit of God (Matthew 12:31-32). But before we explore as to what the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit of God is, let us first seek to see from the Scripture as to what is the sin of the world?

Jesus said that when the Holy Spirit of God comes, he will reprove the world of sin, of righteousness and of judgment and expresses that the sin of the world is unbelief in him (John 16:8-9). The sin of the world is unbelief in Jesus Christ. Extrapolating this with the unforgivable sin reveals that the outright rejection to believe in Jesus despite the conviction of the Holy Spirit is unpardonable for there is no other means to Salvation, except belief in Jesus Christ, but to all who believe, the gift of God is eternal life (Matthew 12:31-32; Acts 4:12; John 3:16).

Points to ponder:
Have you believed in Jesus Christ or are you guilty of the sin of the world? If you are being prompted by the Holy Spirit of God to believe in the Lord and have not yet believed, tarry no further, lest you make yourself unforgivable.

John 16: 7-11 (KJV)
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
Of sin, because they believe not on me;
10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

Matthew 12:31-32 (KJV)
31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

Acts 4:12 (KJV)
12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

    I had a dream.. there was a girl running along side trenches and looked at me and told me to bear witness the sin of the world. Help I don’t know what to think about it.

    • Dear David
      Thank you for writing and asking your question.
      As the blog article mentions, the sin of the world is unbelief in Jesus Christ.
      In simple terms, the Holy Spirit convicts and convinces the world of three things:
      1. sin (the fallen state of man since Adam disobeyed God, and all have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory),
      2. righteousness (of Jesus that is imputed on us when we believe in Jesus, making us righteous, for our self-righteousness are like filthy rags), and
      3. judgment (those who believe and those who don’t believe in Jesus will both be judged – with the difference being … those who believe in Jesus are not condemned to eternal separation from God but instead are judged to be rewarded or not, based on their good works that brought glory to God the Father or otherwise. Those who choose not to believe (or who stubbornly defy) the Lordship of Jesus and his saving work of being the lamb of God who takes our sins away, would be judged and separated from God.
      So the sin of the world is unbelief in Jesus Christ, willfully after having a personal knowledge of what Jesus did for the world.

      Now, coming to your dream, you need to pray and ask God for his specific revelation as did Daniel in the Biblical times. I believe that God wants you to bear witness to the current state of affairs in the world, which is not mere atheism but anti-theism as well, but more importantly, there is no point in stating the problem (with the world), without bearing witness to the solution, who is Jesus Christ (the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world).

      Personally submit yourself to the Lord Jesus Christ, accepting him as your Lord and believing in him to be your Savior, confessing your self-unrighteousness, if you have not already done so, and once you have done that … don’t ever stop from being his witness to your family, friends and people around you.

      God bless you,
      Mano Paul
