Fables Rewritten :: The Fox and the Mask

A FOX had by some means got into the store-room of a theatre. Suddenly he observed a face glaring down on him and began to be very frightened; but looking more closely he found it was only a Mask such as actors use to put over their face. “Ah,” said the Fox, “you look very fine; it is a pity you have not got any brains.” OUTSIDE SHOW IS A POOR SUBSTITUTE FOR INNER WORTH. (Reference: Aesop’s Fables)

Many a times, we attempt to put on a front intending to impress others and hide our real selves behind a mask but the Bible teaches us that it is what is inside that matters – the matters of the heart – not outward appearances. God does not look at outward appearances because an outside show is a poor substitute for inner worth (1 Samuel 16:7)

1 Samuel 16:7 (KJV)
But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.
