Be Still :: Who is With You?

When Jesus was being arrested, one of his disciples, attempted to come to his defense and with his sword, cuts off the ear of the high priest’s servant. Jesus at this time questioned, “Do you not think that I can now pray to God the Father, and He would presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?” (Matthew 26:53). The book of Joshua and Revelation affirms that Jesus Christ is the captain of the armies (host) of the Lord (Joshua 5:14; Revelation 19:14).

One of my favorite songs is  Chris Tomlin’s song, “Whom shall I fear? (God of angel armies)” that is based on the above mentioned scripture. God begins to tell us through the Psalmist “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”  (Psalm 46:10) but then continues to affirm his constant presence and protection by telling us “The Lord of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our refuge” (Psalm 46:11).

Points to ponder:
To be still is to recognize the fact that God is not only a God of control but one who is with us, along with his host of angel armies. Jesus said, “I will never leave you, nor forsake you. I will be with you, even unto the end of the world.” (Hebrews 13:5; Psalm 28:20). The captain of the armies of the Lord is with us and so we have nothing or no one to fear. When Joshua encountered Jesus, the captain of the armies of the Lord, he immediately fell down and worshiped him. What is our response? Are we being still and worshipping the God of angel armies, who is with us, always?

Psalm 46:10-11 (KJV)
10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
11 The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

Be Still :: Who is in Control?

Jackie Chan in the movie, “The Karate Kid” makes a very interesting statement as he teaches his student, Jaden Smith, who plays the character of Dre Parker, that “To be still does not mean doing nothing. When the water is still, one can see one’s own reflection“, he says.

In the Christian life, one of the hardest things to do is to “Be Still”.  To be still doesn’t mean doing nothing. It is anything but being passive as it takes an active and conscious effort to let go and let God be in control. Often, in our desire to be in control, we want quick fixes and attempt to take matters into our own hands, just as the first man, Adam did and sent the world in error pinning.

God tells us through the Psalmist “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”  (Psalm 46:10).

Points to ponder:
To be still is to recognize the fact that God is God and He is in control. Man was not still and came short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Man has to be still to see God exalted in his glory. Are you still before God, recognizing he alone is God? Am I still before God, recognizing His Godship?

Psalm 46:10 (KJV)
10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

Exclusively God’s

One of the definitions in Merriam Webster’s for the word ‘Sanctify’ is ‘to set apart to a sacred purpose.’ The Bible says that we are to be transformed (set apart) and not be conformed to the patterns of this world (Romans 12:2). The Bible also affirms that God has set apart the godly for himself (Psalm 4:3). The sacred purpose is God himself and our purpose in our life is be his followers (Ephesians 5:1). In other words, those who have believed in Jesus Christ are set apart (sanctified) by God, exclusively for God.

Points to ponder:
We are exclusively God’s when we believe in his Son, Jesus Christ. The question is, ‘Is God exclusively yours?’

Psalm 4:3 (KJV)
3 But know that the Lord hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the Lord will hear when I call unto him.

Holy life not Holey life

As followers of God (Ephesians 6:1), God has called us to be Holy because he is Holy (1 Peter 1:15-16).

John Bunyan, Christian writer and preacher who is renowned for his acclaimed book, “The Pilgrim’s Progress” is attributed to have said “One leak will sink a ship: and one  sin will destroy a sinner.” True, it just takes one hole to sink a ship in the physical world. It is likewise in our spiritual life as well. God says through his prophet Ezekiel that the soul that sins shall die (Ezekiel 18:4, 20) and all have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23). In other words, unless the Savior Jesus Christ, mends our holey (sinful) lives, we will sink in the miry pit of sin (Psalm 40:2) that will drown us in death (Romans 6:23).

Point to ponder:
While the grim message of God through the prophet Ezekiel was a proclamation of the death sentence on all mankind because that the soul that sins shall die, the sacrificial death of God’s Only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, brings hope to this hopeless situation, for his death was for us, in our place. When we believe in Jesus Christ, God’s gift to us is eternal life (John 3:16).

God says, Repent and Remember and Return to me. Let us repent. In other words, let our message to Jesus Christ be SOS (Save Our Soul) for when we repent and confess with our mouths, he is faithful and just to cleanse us of all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). In other words, he is willing and will mend the holes in our life.

We are called to live a Holy life and not a Holey life. Let us live according to what God has called us to, for He is Holy.

1 Peter 1:14-16 (KJV)
14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:
15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

No excuse; none at all

From the time, sin entered into the world, man has been known to give ‘excuses’ to justify their position. The first man Adam blamed it on his wife, Eve, who in turn blamed it on the serpent who beguiled her (Genesis 3). Human nature has the inherent tendency to make excuses when things go out of control. Human nature also has the tendency to make excuses to remain in control. This is why there are many who make excuses when they do not want to submit to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, because by doing so, they feel that they may lose control of their own lives. Atheists and Anti-theist all fall into this category, but according to the Bible, there is no excuse for not believing in Jesus. This is recorded in Romans 1:18-20 which states that the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, because God has showed unto them the invisible things of him from the creation of the world, even his eternal power and Godhead. By not believing, these ungodly and unrighteous people profess themselves to be wise, but instead become fools. The fool says in his heart there is no God (Psalm 53:1), but the fool really has no excuse.

Points to ponder:
What is your excuse? The Godhead is revealed in God the Father, Jesus Christ his Son and his Holy Spirit – One God, three persons, and you and I have no excuse for not believing in him. 2 Corinthians 6:2 says, today is the day of  [your] Salvation i.e., Today is the day, you stop making excuses and submit to the Lordship and Salvation found in Jesus Christ. No one can make any excuses for not believing in Jesus; none at all, no one at all.

Romans 1:18-20 (KJV)
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

Beyond the checkmate

Russian born, American novelist, biochemist and Sci-fi author, Issac Asimov is attributed to have quoted “In life, unlike chess, the game continues after checkmate.” Ironically, Mr. Asimov, who claimed to be an atheist, was affirming a vital truth that is in the Bible, as recorded in Hebrews 9:27. It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment. In other words, It is appointed unto men to die, and life continues beyond the checkmate.

Points to ponder:
Just as in the game of chess, there are two sides – one white, and the other black, so also in life there are two types of people – the black and the white. The ones who have believed and repented of their sins, who have been washed by the blood of the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ, are arrayed in white robes of righteousness (Revelation 7:13-14). The ones who are unrepentant continue to be stained with the darkness of sin and are in need of Jesus, the Savior. For both groups of people, life goes beyond the checkmate.  One short sleep and we wake eternally and face judgment for life continues beyond the checkmate of death. How will you face God the judge? In Black or White?

Hebrews 9:26 -28 (KJV)
26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

Jesus Christ – Mr. President

The third Monday of February is celebrated as Presidents’ day in the United States of America. What began initially as a way to remember the first President, George Washington’s birthday was later adapted to remember and honor all past Presidents of America.

Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines the title of the President as an appointed or elected official who is chosen to preside over or govern an assembly.  While on an periodic basis, we vote in elections to choose our next President, the President of all presidents is Jesus Christ, for he is appointed by God to preside over (subdue) all things unto (not under) himself (Philippians 3:21). He is appointed by God to govern (Matthew 2:6; Isaiah 9:6-7) over God’s assembly (the Ekklesia or the Church).  Jesus Christ is Mr. President.

Points to ponder:
Have you elected to choose Jesus to be your President so that he can preside over your life? Elect/Vote ye this day, whom you shall set as President over your life but as for me and my house, we elect to have Jesus Christ, Mr. President, be the Lord and President of our lives,  and only him will we serve. Happy Presidents’ day. God bless you!

Philippians 3:20-21 (KJV)
20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:
21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

Matthew 2:6 (KJV)
And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

Joshua 24:14-15 (KJV)
14 Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord.
15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

Valentine Day – A good day to die hard

When one thinks about Valentine day, thoughts of romance and love often flood the mind. Seldom is death thought of on Valentine’s day, yet in the entertainment industry, Hollywood released on Valentine day this year (February 14, 2013), the action blockbuster as part of the action blockbuster ‘Die Hard’ series, the movie – A good day to die hard.

Come to think of it, not just valentine day, but each day is a good day to die hard – die hard to self and sin. The Bible counsels us to not live after the flesh but if we  live through the Spirit, we need to mortify the deeds of the body so that we shall live (Romans 8:13). We must mortify earthly desires and vices such as fornication (sexual immorality), uncleanness, inordinate affection (lusts), evil concupiscence (desires), and covetousness which is idolatry, anger, rage, malicious behavior, blasphemy (slander), and filthy conversation, and everything that brings the wrath of God. (Colossians 3:5-6). The Apostle Paul writes that he faced death daily (1 Corinthians 15:31) and so not just on valentine’s day but each day, we must mortify the matters of the flesh, presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice as our spiritual act of worship, so that we can live by and through the Spirit of God, conforming each day into Christ’s image.

Points to ponder:
Jesus said, “No greater love has one than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13) and as friends of God (John 15:15), we must lay down our life for Jesus our friend, mortifying our selfish and sinful desires, for the One True God and Savior of the World, in whom is life – life eternal. Valentine day is a good day to die hard – to our self and sin; for our Savior. No greater gift can you give to God than this. Happy Valentine day!

Romans 8:13 (KJV)
13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

Colossians 3:4-10 (KJV)
When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.
Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:
In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.
But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
John 15:13 (KJV)
13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

God Tweet (Wud u b my valentine?)

We live in a world rampant with social networking technologies like Facebook and Twitter. There is more said on Twitter as tweets than in face to face conversation, each day. Most conversations have morphed from dialogs to monologues and people don’t want to sit through long conversations. In today’s fast paced culture, it would seem unlikely that there would be anyone gathered at the foot of the mount to hear the beatitudes or a sermon, even if Jesus was to be preaching it himself. So if God was to send his message as a Tweet, limited to 140 characters and spaces, what would his message for us be?

On February 14, we will be celebrating Valentine day and I wondered as to what God’s message would be, to each one of us on Valentine day. His message would most likely read as follows:

2 u, my @bluvd – Just wanted 2 remind u
that i <3 u. I AM yours and nothing can
separate my love 4 u. Wud u b my
valentine? #JesusValentine

Points to ponder:
Would you be God’s valentine? It begins by believing in his Son Jesus Christ, who loves us with an everlasting and unfailingly love (Jeremiah 31:3) and nothing can separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:38-39). We are God’s beloved (@bluvd) and he Loved us and Loves us! Would you be God’s valentine, today?

Jeremiah 31:3 (KJV)
The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.

Romans 8:38-39 (KJV)
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Jesus Christ – God’s Ice Breaker (God breaks the Ice)

The phrase “break the ice” is attributed to have its root in Sir Thomas North’s 1579 A.D. translation of Plutarch’s Lives of the noble Grecians and Romanes wherein he states “To be the first to break the Ice of the Enterprize.” and later in 1678 A.D., Samuel Butler recorded in the Hudibras “The Oratour – At last broke silence, and the Ice.”  Lord Bryon in 1823 penned in his famous poem ‘Don Juan’ the following lines: “And your cold people are beyond all price, When once you’ve broken their confunded ice.”

To break the ice has come to mean “to break down social formalities and stiffness” but its original meaning was quite literal. Specialized polar exploration ships that were known as ice-breakers were equipped with reinforced hulls and strong engines to plow through frozen rivers, lakes and oceans, thereby allowing other boats and ships to pass and get to the other side of the bank/shore, wherein they could do business.

With the fall of man, man was separated from God as he was sent out of the garden of Eden, where he experienced relationship with God as a friend in conversation (Genesis 3) , and with every inclination of man’s thoughts turning evil (Genesis 6:5), this gap widened. The personal  relationship and love that was experienced by our forefathers like Adam and Enoch (the seventh from Adam) had gone cold and the world became sinful on account of one man, the first Adam (Romans 5:12). It is as if the relationship gap between God and man got frozen. Yet, while we were still sinners, God reached out and sent forth his Son, Jesus Christ  for us (Romans 5:8). Jesus Christ, broke the ice between God and man; Jesus Christ is God’s ice breaker. He made it possible for us to reach God and be engaged with him in his kingdom business.

Points to ponder:
We live in an age of “relationships” and social networking is rampant as evident from the plethora of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. accounts. Men and women desire to be in a relationship and seek partnerships to address the problem of their loneliness, but The One who can truly fill the void of loneliness is God himself, and none other. With an increase in man’s selfish desires and sinfulness, the relationship gap between God and man has been widening.  Of late, it is unfortunately not uncommon to observe that the fiery love, man once had to God, has not only become lukewarm (Revelation 3:15) but in many situations cold as ice. No one is righteous; no not one (Romans 3:10) and God-haters and wickedness abounds. Even within the church, there is a lukewarmness, and sin itself is condoned, instead of being condemned. The love of many has grown (waxed) cold. Jesus warned of this very situation in the end days and he counseled us to be watchful, so that our love (for him and his people) does not wax cold (Matthew 24:12).

I once heard (Late) Dr. Praveen Mittapalli, a mentor and friend, say in a message he shared in our Church, “God has called us to be bold and chosen, but many of us are unfortunately cold and frozen.” God has broken the ice that while we were still sinners, God sent forth his son, Jesus Christ to die for us. If you have never have had a relationship with God, then tarry no further. All you need to do is simply believe in Jesus Christ, the ice breaker, Just come as you are and believe! For those of us who have believed in God’s son, Jesus Christ, let us not be lukewarm, cold or frozen, but let us reach out to him, by The Way of Jesus Christ, and be bold and chosen for him, partnering with God, being his co-laborer and engaging in God’s business of reconciling man with God.

Romans 5:8 (KJV)
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Revelation 3:15-16 (KJV)
15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
