Jesus Christ – Hobson’s Choice

Recently I came across the term “Hobson’s Choice” and was intrigued by what it meant. While researching the origin of this phrase, I came across “The Phrase Finder” wherein the following was stated to describe the meaning of the term “Hobson’s Choice.” “Thomas Hobson (1545–1631) ran a thriving carrier and horse rental business in Cambridge, England, around the turn of the 17th century. Hobson rented out horses, mainly to Cambridge University students, but refused to hire them out other than in the order he chose. The choice his customers were given was ‘this or none’; quite literally, Hobson’s choice.” 

When you are presented with Hobson’s Choice, the only options that is given is to either “accept” or “refuse” the offer that is given to you.

Jesus Christ is the Hobson’s Choice of God to man. God offered his only begotten Son to take our place on the cross and everyone who believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life, but the choice is ours to make. You can either choose to believe in Jesus or not. You can either “accept” or “refuse” God’s offer to man. There is no other option – no other way for the Salvation of our souls, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved, other than the name of Jesus (Acts 4:12).

Points to ponder:
What is your choice?  Choose ye this day to “accept” Jesus Christ and be saved!

The ball is in your court (for now)

Something I once saw a while ago, read as:
Life: The ball’s in your court.
After death: It’s God’s turn.

The Bible says, it is appointed unto men to die once and then the judgement (Hebrews 9:27).

Points to ponder:
While we still have the breath of life, the ball is in our court, and after death it is only judgment. Are you prepared to face Jesus Christ as Judge? In other words, have you believed in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? Only those who have faced and who acknowledge Christ as Savior now, while the ball is in our court, can face Jesus as Judge when it is his turn.

27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

Wanna be prosperous? :: Serve God

Disciple: “What must I do to be prosperous?”
God: “Serve!”

In the book of Job, the Bible records that those who obey and serve God, returning from their sinfulness (as God has commanded), will spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures (Job 36:10-11). Prosperity comes from obedience and service. There are many who have  believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who obeyed God and repented of their sins, but seldom are they in service to God.

Points to ponder:
Wanna be prosperous? Serve God as he did. Jesus laid the model down for us and he expressed it by saying, “I did not come to be served (ministered) but to serve (minister) and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Matthew 28:20). Would you consider yourself as prosperous? In other words, “Are you sacrificially serving God after you have believed and repented of your sins?”.

11 If they obey and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures.

Disciple: “What must I do to be prosperous?”
God: “Sin not”

When the leaders of Judah decided to abandon the Temple of the Lord and instead fall into the sin of idolatry, worshipping Asherah poles and idols, it infuriated God. Yet the LORD sent his prophets to warn his people so that they would repent and return to him, but the people did not listen. Then God’s Spirit was poured out on Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada the priest, with the question “Why transgress ye the commandments of the Lord, that ye cannot prosper?” The message of the LORD was for the people to sin (transgress) not so that they may prosper, but the people at the commandment of their king, heeded not the message of God and sinned even more by stoning Zechariah to death.

Points to ponder:
Wanna be prosperous? Heed God’s voice and sin not. Why transgress ye the commandments of the Lord, that ye cannot prosper? 

2 Chronicles 24:17-21 (KJV)
17 Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah, and made obeisance to the king. Then the king hearkened unto them.
18 And they left the house of the Lord God of their fathers, and served groves and idols: and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their trespass.
19 Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again unto the Lord; and they testified against them: but they would not give ear.
20 And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the Lord, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the Lord, he hath also forsaken you.
21 And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the Lord.

Wanna be prosperous? :: Strong and Steadfast

Disciple: “What must I do to be prosperous?”
God: “Be strong and courageous!”
Disciple: “Strong and courageous for what?”
God: “To be steadfast (not turing to right or the left) in observing all that I have commanded.”

Points to ponder:
Wanna be prosperous? Be steadfast in observing what God has commanded you to do, without weakening under the pressures of a world that is in enmity with God (James 4:4). To obey him is to love him and to love him is to keep (observe) his commandments, for Jesus said if you love me, you will keep my commandments (John 14:15), and in keeping his commandments will all men know that we are his disciples (John 13:35). Would you consider yourself as prosperous? In other words, “Are you being strong and courageous in being steadfast – steadfast in keeping God’s commandments?”

6 Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.
7 Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper withersoever thou goest.
8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

Disciple: “What must I do to be prosperous?”
God: “Seek me!”

The Bible tells us the story of Uzziah, the King of Judah who was sixteen years old when he was made king. Uzziah reigned for fifty two years and in the early days of his reign, Uzziah did right in the eyes of the Lord and he sought the God and as long as he sought the Lord, God made him prosper (2 Chronicles 26:5).

Points to ponder:
Wanna be prosperous? Seek the Lord God and his kingdom first, and all other things (that tend to make you prosperous) will be added unto you (Matthew 6:33). Would you consider yourself as prosperous? In other words, “are you seeking him?”.

3 Sixteen years old was Uzziah when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty and two years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Jecoliah of Jerusalem.
4 And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father Amaziah did.
5 And he sought God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of God: and as long as he sought the Lord, God made him to prosper.
