While Nahum 1:7 assures that the Lord is good and a strong hold to those who trust in him, Nahum 1:8, in contrast, shows that God will be an overrunning flood that destroys his enemies. The Assyrians (inhabitants of Nineveh) were enemies of the children of God. This prophecy by prophet Nahum directly refers to the opening of the gates of the rivers that will dissolve the palace of the king of Assyria, making Nineveh like a pool of water (Nahum 2:6,8). History informs us that the Khosr river, a tributary of the Tigris, ran directly through the center of the city of Nineveh. This river was dammed and then released as a flood to overthrow Nineveh by the Babylonians and the Medes in 612 B.C. fulfilling the  prophecy of Nahum 1:8. The Assyrians were led captive after their capture (Nahum 2:7) and with their leaders put to their grave, which is a dark place (Job 17:13).

Symbolically, this prophecy also refers to the end times, for the Scriptures says that the end shall come like a flood (Daniel 9:26) and those who do not belong to God’s kingdom, for they refused to put their trust in the Lord God, Jesus Christ, to be their Salvation, shall be pursued by eternal external (outer) darkness, separated from God (Matthew 8:12).

Points to ponder:
Do you belong to God’s kingdom? In other words, are you sure that you will not be overrun by the Lord, when he returns? Have you placed your trust in the Lord Jesus Christ? If so, you need not be worried of the pestilence that walks in the darkness. If not, you have every reason to be afraid of the pursuing darkness of the grave, eternally separated from God, in the outer darkness. Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, today!
