God our Mother

For some, the title of this article may seem absurd, but there is a point to be made. Having said that, this article is not about speculating on the gender of God as much as it is to get a glimpse of the character of God, which is not confined to merely one of the two genders, as we know about (male and female).  While most references to God is as God the Father, the Bible at times portrays God as a mother as well. In fact, God is Spirit when he created man, the Bible establishes that God created man in his own image, both male AND female, he created them.

Growing up in India, one of the familiar sights in the streets of the village of Malkangiri that I grew up was the sight of hens and chicks roaming the streets. These cute little chicks would follow their mother hen, strutting about and whenever they would sense any kind of danger, they would huddle and scamper under their mother. The mother hen would often spread its wings to cover and protect her baby chicks.

On May 10, 2015, we celebrated Mother’s day in honor of our mothers … and as I pondered about what to write, I learned that God our Father, considers himself to be like our mother as well. Jesus himself establishes this motherly character of God, when he spoke of himself/God and questioned, “how often would I have gather your children together, even as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings (Matthew 23:37)”.

Points to ponder:
So this Mothers day and in all to come, let us remember to honor our earthly mothers, but more importantly, let us remember to recognize and honor God above all.

God will not forget (you and me)

We celebrated Mother’s day on the eleventh day of May, in the year of the Lord 2014, and as I pondered about what God teaches us through his Holy Scripture about Mothers, a few thoughts came to mind, but one that really stood out is recorded in Isaiah 49:15. Isaiah 49:15 reads “Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.” In other words, God is saying that while it may be impossible for a mother to forget her child, even if that were possible, when it comes to God, God will not  forget us. 

Points to ponder:
God is more than a mother to each on of us. He will not forget you and me!

Never forsaken; Never forgotten

In addition to our 12 year wedding anniversary, we celebrated Mother’s day on May 12, 2013 and I wondered as to what the Bible has to say about “mothers”.

Psalm 27:10 states “When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.”, affirming that the Lord God will never forsake us. Isaiah 49:15 questions “Can a woman forget her sucking child without any compassion on the son of her womb?” Such an act seems implausible though possible and yea even if a mother may forget her child, God says, I will not forget you, affirming that the Lord God will never forget us.

Points to ponder:
The LORD God will never forsake you, nor forget you and we can take solace in the fact that even if our own forsake and/or forget us, we will never be forsaken nor forgotten.

More than a father or mother

On May 13, 2012, most of the world celebrated Mother’s day in honor of our earthly mothers and soon we will be celebrating Father’s day on June 17, 2012 in honor of earthly fathers. As I pondered on what the scripture has to say about fathers and mothers, I actually learned about the unfailing never forsaking character of God.

Some of us have been blessed to have earthly mothers and fathers that love us and care for us, while there are others who are not quite as fortunate. In my wife, I see a mother who unconditionally loves our two precious sons, Reuben and Ittai. Some of us have lost our father or mother or both physically while others have lost them relationally, either on account of their faith or some other reason. For some, the very thought that a father or mother can forsake their children is not only improbable but impossible, while for others it may be reality. In any case, no matter what, the scripture gives a blessed assurance that even if your earthly father and mother forsake you, yet the Lord will never forsake you.

Points to ponder:
God is more than a father or mother to each one of us, because even if our earthly fathers and mothers forsake us, yet will the Lord never abandon us, and we can take solace in that blessed assurance.

Handprints

Reuben_HandprintsA king of whose wisdom was so renowned that even Jesus mentions him by name (Matthew 12:42) was King Solomon, the son of David, the king of Israel. Solomon was not only a king, but he was wiser than any other man, an author of 3000 proverbs, composer of 1500 songs, architect, arbitrator, administrator, botanist, zoologist, ornithologist, herpetologist, ichthyologist, philosopher, preacher, and it is this king with so many titles that can be conferred on him, that makes a very interesting statement as he begins his kingship. He exclaims that He is only a little child. (1 Kings 3:7). Hold that thought.

On Mother’s day, this year, our beloved son, Reuben (3 year old), gave my wife, Sangeetha, a precious gift that he had made in school for her. It was his little handprint (click image) with the following words.

Sometimes you get discouraged because I am so small
And always leave my fingerprints on furniture and walls.

But everyday I am growing up and I will be grown up someday,
and all those tiny handprints will surely fade away.

So … Here is a final handprint, just so you can recall,
Exactly how my fingers looked, when I was this small.

A realization of how small we are is critical in our walk with Christ. Jesus himself said, in order for anyone to enter into the kingdom of heaven, he must become (be converted as) a child and added that the one who humbles himself/herself as a child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.  Jesus never prevented the little children from coming to him.

I believe it is the honesty in humility that is exuberant in a child that Jesus want us to build in our character toward God and toward man. I believe that it was the honesty of Solomon’s realization that he was only a little child and the sincerity of his recognition as to how humbling it was that God had chosen him was pivotal in God exalting him to be a great king (Whosoever humbles himself as a little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven).

Point(s) to ponder:

Let us realize, that if we leave our handprints on the lives of people around us, let us do so, with a heart of humility, always being cognizant of the fact that we are only little children. If God was to look at the handprints that we leave behind, will He be able to smile (as a Father) and recall how small we have been and are.
