One and Only Great God

After the Super Bowl XLIV game (February 07, 2010) was over, one of the final statements in Super Bowl XLIV, made by the Most Valuable Player (MVP) Quarterback Drew Brees of the winning New Orleans Saints team, was amidst all the celebration a one-liner, wherein he said, “God is Great”. In the movie, “Slumdog millionaire”, the brother of the main character, as he is shot in the end, takes his last dying breath by expressing “God is Great”.

One of the definitions for the word “great” according to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary is “chief or preeminent over others”. God is chief. God is preeminent over all others. What’s more is that the God of the Bible, God in three Persons as Yahweh, Jesus and the Holy Spirit is the One and Only Great God, who does wondrous things. The Psalmist avers this is Psalm 86:10.

Point(s) to ponder:

  1. Do you/I know this One and Only Great God?
  2. Is He the chief of all things in your life and mine?
  3. Is He preeminent over all things in your/my life?

Psalm 86:10 (KJV)
10 For thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone.

Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak

Qyamat Se Qyamat Tak (pronounced Kahyahmuth Say Kahyahmuth Thuk) is ranked to be one of the Top 25 must see Bollywood movies according to Indiatimes and recently I was listening to the song “Papa kehte hain” from this movie which brought back some fond memories of my school days. I have heard this song so many times when I was growing up, but it was only now that I really paid attention to the words which made me wonder.

Sung by the main character, the lyrics of the main part of this song goes as follows (and the English meaning is provided for readers who don’t know Hindi)
Papa kehte hain bada naam karega
(Daddy says that I will make a big name)
Beta hamara aisa kaam karega
(and will have a good career/job)
Magar yeh toh, kohi na jaane
(but this, no one really knows)
Ki mere manjil, hai kahan?
(as to where my future is)

What a pitiful state this is for those who hold that opinion, that no one really knows where one’s future is? Hold that thought!

The Hindi word Qayamat has its roots in the word Qiyamat which is a variant of the arabic word Qiyaamah. Qiyaamah means the day of Resurrection or the day of Judgment. Qiyaamah comes from the root word Qiyam which means ‘to stand’ and so Qayamat is the word used to describe the day of resurrection, the day of standing, the day of judgment. It is the day when everyone will be resurrected and stand before God to be judged.

The question that remains then is ‘ in what state will we all stand before God to be judged?’ Will it be as one whose future is not known or as one whose hope of the future is assured? The answer to this vital question is dependent on a choice that you and I make. A choice as to whether we respond to receive Jesus Christ, accepting and believing in Him or rebel against Him by rejecting Him. Those whose have taken the step to believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior will not have to worry about their future when they stand before Him, because Christ in them is the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27).

Qyamat Se Qayamat Tak would mean from the day of Judgment to the day of Judgment. From the day of Judgment when the God’s justice was placed on Jesus Christ as he was crucified for the salvation of all men and women to the day of Judgment when all men and women will be judged by THE ONE true Righteous Judge, Jesus Christ.

John 6:39 (KJV)
39 And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.

Revelation 20:11-13 (KJV)
11
And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
12
And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
13
And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

Jesus in the OT :: Esther

The book of Esther gives us a glimpse of who Jesus is in the Old Testament (O.T).

The book in which the word ‘God’ is not mentioned even once (Acts 17 – Unknown God; Psalm 19: There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard), yet His character is evident through all of the events that transpire in this time frame where Esther is made the queen of Persia.

Also, did you know that the land of India is mentioned in this book (Esther 1:1 – Ahaseurus reigned from India unto Ethiopia, from Persia). Sandwiched between the 1st and 2nd return of the people of God from Babylon (led by Zerubbabel and Ezra) and the 3rd and final return (led by Nehemiah), to the remnant that chose to remain in Babylon, God raises his ruler so his people can be saved. As we look for Christ in the book of Esther, we are often told about how Mordecai, Esther’s cousin, typified Christ from the very last verse in this book – Esther 10:3
3 For Mordecai the Jew was next unto king Ahasuerus, and great among the Jews, and accepted of the multitude of his brethren, seeking the wealth of his people, and speaking peace to all his seed.
Which can be used to reflect
For Jesus, the Jew was next unto the King of kings (God the Father) and the greatest among all Jews, accepted by many, seeking the wellbeing of his people and speaking peace to all his children.

But I want us to focus our attention today on the title character – Esther.
One of my favorite movies of all times is “A few Good Men”. In that there is a dialogue that takes place between Jack Nicholson (playing Colonel Jessup, the marine) and Tom Cruise (playing Lieutenant Kaffee, the prosecuting attorney).

JESSEP: I ordered Markinscn to have Santiago (the marine who is killed that causes this entire investigation) transferred off the base immediately.
KAFFEE: Why?
JESSEP: I felt that his life might be in danger once word of the letter got out.
KAFFEE: Grave danger?
JESSEP: Is there another kind?

The scriptural record in Esther brings to our attention, Haman, who was promoted to be prince over Persia, an evil man who sought to annihilate all the Jews i.e. put the Jews in GRAVE danger. Daniel 10:13,20 talks about how the prince of Persia (a demonic force) delayed God’s messenger from bringing the message to Daniel, God’s servant for 21 days, eluding to spiritual battle. Mordecai, Esther’s cousin intervenes and plans the salvation of his people by making Esther intercede with the King. When Mordecai asks her to speak up for her people, hoping that Esther has probably been established by God FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS (Esther 4:14)

Note Esther response – If I perish, I perish
Similar to Jesus’ words, I lay down my life for my sheep (John 10)

Esther was made for such a time as this.

Jesus’ words before he endured to the cross willingly – the hour is come (Mark 14:41). Earlier in John 2:4 – Jesus tells his mother, my hour is not yet come.
Jesus was God made in the image of man, for such a time as this, for such a people (you and me), saving us from DANGER UNTO DELIVERANCE (deliver us from the evil one – in the prayer that Jesus taught us to pray).

In Esther, Jesus is our Intercessor and Salvation (for such a time as this, for such a people).

The Elements – Earth, Air, Fire and Water

Earth Air Fire Water Ambigram

Earth Air Fire Water Ambigram

One of the movies that I like to watch is The Fifth Element, whose synopsis is two hundred and fifty years in the future, life as we know it is threatened by the arrival of Evil. Only the fifth element (divine supreme being) can stop the Evil from extinguishing life. The other four elements in the movie are earth, air, fire and water, which are not foreign to astrology and horoscopes and even fictional writers such as Dan Brown (author of the Da Vinci Code), in his book Angels and Demons refers to these four elements as mystical elements used as Illuminati markers and depicted artistically as an ambigram (as seen in this picture).

With a heavy undertone of these elements in horoscopes that several blindly follow, it perplexes me to realize as to why so many people would look to the stars (horoscopes) for answers, when they can look to the very One (Jesus Christ) who made the stars.

This series is entitled “The Elements”. My intent is to see from the scriptures how the LORD Jesus Christ is so beautifully represented in these elements, so that those who are seeking answers need NOT have to look at the elements but at THE ELEMENT and answer to all of their questions. You can view today’s articles as merely a preview of articles to come in which we will expand on each of these elements, representative of THE Christ and Savior, Jesus and what we are commissioned to be and do as followers of Christ, apropos.

Earth (rock) – Jesus Christ is the Rock (1 Corinthians 10:4), the Only One that stands, on whom on can stand and not fall, the Only One that Saves (Psalm 95:1)
Air –  The breath (air) of the Almighty God gives Life (Job 33:4)
Fire – The indwelling of the Holy Spirit of God was externally expressed as tongues of Fire on the day of the Pentecost (Acts 2:3-4)
Water – Jesus is the living Water (John 4:10-14)

Evident in the scriptures, the apt conclusion to this day’s article is this- For by him (Jesus) were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist (Colossians 1:16-17).

Dancing with unseen forces

An excerpt from Past President, George W. Bush, Jr’s radio address to the Nation in the wake of the Sept 11th twin tower terrorist attack was as follows – This will be a different kind of conflict, against a different kind of enemy. This is a conflict without battle fields or beachheads, a conflict with opponents who believe they are invisible.

A couple of years ago, I watched the movie, Van Helsing. It was a good entertainer, and one particular scene that made me reflect was a scene in which Dracula is dancing with a lady in room with mirrors. In the mirrors, you can observe the reflection of lady but not of Dracula. It seemed as if the lady was dancing with an unseen force.

The Bible records that our struggles are not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, powers, ruler of the darkness of this world, and against spiritual wickedness in the heavenly realms; in a sense, against unseen forces.

What are the unseen forces that you and I are dancing with? Le us remember to put on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6) and recognize that the battle belongs to the Lord.
Let us  submit the struggle against anything (seen or unseen) that weighs us down, with prayer and supplication, to the Lord, so you and I can complete the race, fight the good fight, and keep the faith.

Our toddler son, Reuben, telling us the Armor of God. He was a little over 2 years when he said this. Enjoy.

Ephesians 6:12-18 (KJV)
12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
13
Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14
Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
15
And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16
Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
17
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
18
Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

Friday the 13th – unlucky or lucky day!

Today is Friday the 13th and superstition holds that when the thirteenth day of the month falls on a Friday (Friday the 13th), it is often accompanied with luck (usually bad).
There are many roots to the etymology of this superstition, and your guess could be as good as mine in determining its exact origin, however one theory subscribes to the thought that this term came about as a derivative of “the Last Supper” of the Lord Jesus Christ with his twelve (12) disciples, making the number 13 in toto. before He was crucified on that following Friday (commonly known today as Good Friday).

Whether there is any verity in this theory or not is immaterial. But what matters is that while Friday the 13th may seem to the world as being an unlucky day (as evident in Hollywood’s production of horror movies associated with Friday the 13th), we can deem this to be in fact our lucky day; where, because of one Friday, on which 13 members gathered around a table (The Last Supper), God could reconnect with us (sinful men and women), by allowing His Only Begotten Son (Jesus Christ) to die on the Cross.

Point(s) to Ponder:

  1. If you do NOT know, Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, then let today (Friday the 13th) become your lucky day to reconnect with God, by believing that Jesus is the Christ (Savior).
  2. If you know, Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, then let today (Friday the 13th) be your lucky day as any other day.

Tiger Tiger Burning Bright

TigerOne of the songs that we jam to, on Guitar Hero World Tour, is the ever famous “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor (1982), the same song that is the backdrop to Sylvester Stallone’s movie – Rocky. Listening to this song, got me thinking as to what was so special about the Eye of the Tiger. Undoubtedly, it is intimidating, captivating and hypnotic to say the least.

The more, I pondered, the more, I felt myself bewildered and my mind wandered. I started to reminisce about a poem, I learned when I was a little child; the poem “The Tiger” by William Blake.

Excerpts of the poem are given below –

Stanza 1
Tiger Tiger Burning Bright
In the forest of the night
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

Stanzas 2,3 (skipped)
Stanza 4
When the stars threw down their spears,
And water’d heaven with their tears,
Did He smile His work to see?
Did He who made the lamb make thee?

Stanza 5 (skipped)

Inquisitiveness to explore further, to glean the depth of the meaning, made me realize that while the poem may seem to be talking about one of God’s most beautiful and fearsome creation – The Tiger, it’s really about the creator God, the one who is immortal (whose immortal hand and eye it was), who fashioned and framed the Tiger (could frame thy fearful symmetry?). He is the same God who fashioned the Lion and the Lamb (Note the question posed by the poet – Did He who made the lamb make thee?).

Colossians 1:15-18 records the preeminence of Jesus Christ in all of Creation and verse 16 reads. For by him (Jesus Christ) were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him.

Everything (the Burning Bright Tiger, you, me …), absolutely everything, was created by God and for God. This is something that should never be forgotten. We are made in God’s image, For GOD. and when God sees us, can it be asked – Did He smile His work to see?
