God’s valentine (sweetheart)

One of the definitions of the word ‘Valentine’ in the Merriam-Webster’s dictionary is “a sweetheart who is chosen.”

Jesus, the Beloved (sweetheart) of God (Ephesians 1:6) was chosen (Isaiah 53:10) as the perfect acceptable sacrifice (Hebrews 10:1-18). God loved this world so much that he gave us, The Valentine, Jesus Christ, so that everyone who believe in him shall be his valentine (John 3:16) – for those who belong to Christ are God’s (1 Corinthians 3:23), a chosen generation (of sweetheart) (1 Peter 2:9).

Points to ponder:
God has made it possible for you to be his valentine, by his beloved son, Jesus Christ, The Valentine, chosen and given for the world. The question is, is God your valentine?

Valentine Day – A good day to die hard

When one thinks about Valentine day, thoughts of romance and love often flood the mind. Seldom is death thought of on Valentine’s day, yet in the entertainment industry, Hollywood released on Valentine day this year (February 14, 2013), the action blockbuster as part of the action blockbuster ‘Die Hard’ series, the movie – A good day to die hard.

Come to think of it, not just valentine day, but each day is a good day to die hard – die hard to self and sin. The Bible counsels us to not live after the flesh but if we  live through the Spirit, we need to mortify the deeds of the body so that we shall live (Romans 8:13). We must mortify earthly desires and vices such as fornication (sexual immorality), uncleanness, inordinate affection (lusts), evil concupiscence (desires), and covetousness which is idolatry, anger, rage, malicious behavior, blasphemy (slander), and filthy conversation, and everything that brings the wrath of God. (Colossians 3:5-6). The Apostle Paul writes that he faced death daily (1 Corinthians 15:31) and so not just on valentine’s day but each day, we must mortify the matters of the flesh, presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice as our spiritual act of worship, so that we can live by and through the Spirit of God, conforming each day into Christ’s image.

Points to ponder:
Jesus said, “No greater love has one than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13) and as friends of God (John 15:15), we must lay down our life for Jesus our friend, mortifying our selfish and sinful desires, for the One True God and Savior of the World, in whom is life – life eternal. Valentine day is a good day to die hard – to our self and sin; for our Savior. No greater gift can you give to God than this. Happy Valentine day!

We live in a world rampant with social networking technologies like Facebook and Twitter. There is more said on Twitter as tweets than in face to face conversation, each day. Most conversations have morphed from dialogs to monologues and people don’t want to sit through long conversations. In today’s fast paced culture, it would seem unlikely that there would be anyone gathered at the foot of the mount to hear the beatitudes or a sermon, even if Jesus was to be preaching it himself. So if God was to send his message as a Tweet, limited to 140 characters and spaces, what would his message for us be?

On February 14, we will be celebrating Valentine day and I wondered as to what God’s message would be, to each one of us on Valentine day. His message would most likely read as follows:

2 u, my @bluvd – Just wanted 2 remind u
that i <3 u. I AM yours and nothing can
separate my love 4 u. Wud u b my
valentine? #JesusValentine

Points to ponder:
Would you be God’s valentine? It begins by believing in his Son Jesus Christ, who loves us with an everlasting and unfailingly love (Jeremiah 31:3) and nothing can separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:38-39). We are God’s beloved (@bluvd) and he Loved us and Loves us! Would you be God’s valentine, today?

3 The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.

Romans 8:38-39 (KJV)
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Commonly, the word ‘valentine’ is used to refer to someone’s sweetheart but interestingly, the Merriam-Webster’s dictionary also defines the word ‘valentine’ as “a gift or greeting sent or given to someone special.” Valentine means a gift and a gift represents both the heart of the giver and the receiver. The one giving gives because he or she loves the one to whom it is given. The one receiving is given because they are deemed special by the giver.

God sent us His Son (Jesus Christ), and through Him, we receive the gift of eternal life. Why did God do this? Because He loved you and I, whom He deems to be very special. We are the apple of His eye.

The ever popular verse from Romans 6:23 can be read as “the valentine (gift) of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”. You are special in God’s eye. I am special in God’s eye. He loves you and me very much and He has sent us the valentine (gift) of eternal life. All we need to do, is receive His gift by believing that Jesus Christ is God’s valentine to mankind.

23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift [valentine] of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Named after one of the early Christian martyrs named Valentinus who was killed on February 14th, Valentine day is an annual holiday celebrating love between intimate companions. The name Valentinus is a derivative of the Latin word ‘valens’ which means ‘strong’ or ‘powerful’. Interestingly, there is a strong and powerful connection between the celebration of love and the two greatest commandments of all, which is to love the Lord and to love man (your neighbor).

Who do we love? i.e., Who is our Valentine?

  • God;
    thou shalt love the Lord thy God with ALL thy heart, and with ALL thy soul, and with ALL thy mind, and with ALL thy strength     (Mark 12:30)
  • Man;
    Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.     (Mark 12:31)
    In other words, God is to be our valentine and so is man!

How do we love?

  • By keeping his commandments;
    If ye love me, keep my commandments     (John 14:15)

How much do we love –

  • God?
    Totally;
    thou shalt love the Lord thy God with ALL thy heart, and with ALL thy soul, and with ALL thy mind, and with ALL thy strength     (Mark 12:30)
  • Man?
    Sacrificially;
    Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.     (John 15:13)

Why do we need to love?

  • To know God;
    Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.     (1 John 4:7-8).
  • To show that we are His disciples;
    By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.     (John 13:35)
    We are to love to know and show God!

Danish theologian and philosopher, who is accredited to be one of the most eminent Lutheran theologian, Soren Kierkegaard, rightfully quoted “Love is all, it gives all, and it takes all.”

The greatest of ALL is Love (God) and God gave ALL (including His only begotten Son) so that He could take ALL of us (irrespective of who we are or how we have lived). Additionally, it takes all to give all (Total surrender). Our love must be strong and powerful. Think about it!

Mark 12:29-31 (KJV)
29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:
30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

Jesus My Valentine

Valentine_316Today is Valentine’s day and while we some may have taken the time to wish our spouses and girlfriends/boyfriends, children, relatives, teachers and friends, a very special Happy Valentine day while others may have forgotten to do so (present company included), there is one person, that we should have never forgotten to wish to be our Valentine; and that person is Jesus Christ.
