Total Surrender :: Father, into thy hands, I commend my spirit

Jesus’ seventh saying from the Cross is recorded in the gospel according to apostle Luke in chapter 23 verse 46. It reads, “And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.”

Jesus’ body and blood was given for mankind (1 Corinthians 11:24-25). Jesus’ Holy Spirit was presented to God for approval (which is what commend means) and upon God’s acceptance and approval of Jesus’ sacrifice, of which the Holy Spirit who was surrendered is a witness (Hebrews 10:14-15), God could now send the Holy Spirit of Jesus to dwell within men for we are now the temple of the living God (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

Points to ponder:
Jesus totally surrendered his life and spirit for you and me. He totally surrendered his living Spirit to God so that the living Spirit of God could be sent to dwell within our lives, when we totally surrender ourselves to God. Have you told God, “Father, into your hands, I commend my spirit” as I totally surrender? Have you totally surrendered?

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (KJV)
19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of [received from] God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

A sacrificial (loving) Father; A heart transplant

We all celebrated Father’s day 2012 on June 17, 2012 and I spent the day with my family. When our beloved  firstborn son, Reuben (now 6 years old), was brushing his teeth, I was talking to him about some good “Father’s day” movies, calling out “The Lion King”, “Finding Nemo” and “John Q”. Since he had not watched the movie, John Q, I told him the synopsis of the movie, which goes on something like this. A father (played by Denzel Washington) who dearly loves his son (who is in need of a heart transplant) is planning and willing to sacrifice himself so that his son could have his heart.

As I pondered on the depth of this father’s love for his son, in this heart-warming movie, I quickly realized that even greater love had God the Father for each of us, his children. We all needed a heart transplant – so that our hearts of stone (rebellion against God, reviling in sin) could be replaced with a heart of flesh (one that loves God wholeheartedly) (Ezekiel 36:26). God the Father, loved us so much that he not only planned our salvation (1 Peter 1:20) and was willing (1 Timothy 2:3-4), but he actually had his heart broken forsaking his Only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, (Matthew 27:46) to be the acceptable sacrifice for us (Hebrews 10:1-18)

Behold, what manner of love the Father has bestowed upon each one of us – that we should be called the sons of God (1 John 3:1). And the lyrics of the song “How deep the Father’s love for us” by Stuart Townend beautifully expresses this –

How deep the Father’s love for us, How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son to make a wretch His treasure

How great the pain of searing loss, The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the chosen One bring many sons to glory

Behold the Man upon a cross, My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed I hear my mocking voice, Call out among the scoffers

It was my sin that left Him there until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life, I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything, No gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection

Why should I gain from His reward?  I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart, His wounds have paid my ransom

26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

Jesus in the OT :: Zephaniah

In Christian, Jesus in the O.T.

The book of Zephaniah gives us a glimpse of who Jesus is in the Old Testament (O.T).

The name Tesphan-yah mean “Yahweh hides” or “Yahweh has hidden”.

Zephaniah 1:7 states that The Lord has prepared a sacrifice. The Lord has prepared a sacrifice; not sacrifices. It is a singular sacrifice prepared by the LORD (Yahweh); Jesus Christ is the first (alpha) and final (omega) sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. (Hebrews 10:1-18)

Zephaniah 2:3 counsels that we ought to seek God, seek righteousness, and seek meekness and we shall be hid in the day of the LORD’s anger.

When we seek and believe in Jesus Christ, the righteousness of God, we no longer have to hide ourselves from God, because his sacrificial blood hides our sins from Him. Jesus hides the anger of God on us.

In Zephaniah, Jesus is THE SACRIFICE prepared by God, who hides us from the wrath of God.

Zephaniah 1:7 (KJV)
7 Hold thy peace at the presence of the Lord GOD: for the day of the LORD is at hand: for the LORD hath prepared a sacrifice, he hath bid his guests.

Zephaniah 2:3 (KJV)
3 Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD’s anger.
