The Source of Life

When Rachel was barren, she said unto her husband Jacob “Give me children, or else I die.” This angered Jacob who in his anger questioned Rachel and said “Am I in God’s stead to withhold the fruit of the womb?” What this establishes is that, it is only God who can bring forth life for children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward (Psalm 127:3). The source of life is God.

Points to ponder:
A child who is born into a family is a reward i.e., life is the result of the favor of God. In like manner and more importantly, a child who is born again into the family of God by believing in Jesus is solely because of the grace of God. God is the only source of not only life but eternal life. Physical and ephemeral life is solely by the favor of God. Spiritual and eternal life is solely by the grace of God. God alone is the source of life – physical and spiritual; ephemeral and eternal.

Are you assured of eternal life after your physical life has passed? In other words, are you assured of living eternally? If not, tarry no longer but believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, acknowledging his Lordship and confessing our sins for everyone who believes in Christ Jesus will not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16). Jesus Christ alone is the source of Life – life that matters – eternal life.

Genesis 30:1-2 (KJV)
And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die.
And Jacob’s anger was kindled against Rachel: and he said, Am I in God’s stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?

Inheriting God’s favor (in a Son)

Reuben, our beloved firstborn son, turned 7 years old yesterday (January 20, 2013) and as we reflect, on this precious gift of God the Father (Abishai) unto us, we are grateful to God for his goodness and grace that we experience in and through Reuben. God has blessed him with many talents and gifts, in faith, academics and in sports. He is gifted with a good sense of memory, memorizes Bible verses speedily, prays with faith, was identified and placed in the gifted an talented program at his School, participates in gymnastics, swimming and is a 2nd degree Brown belt in Shaolin-Do Kung Fu.

The Bible says that “Children are a heritage of the Lord” (Psalm 127:2) and the Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines the word ‘Heritage’ as ‘property that is descended to an heir.’ As we reflect on these 7 years with Reuben as our Son, we recognize that “Reuben is a heritage of the Lord.”, a loan from above. In other words, he is God’s property given to us as a gift, as we are God’s heirs because of what Jesus Christ victoriously accomplished. Jesus restored the relationship of fallen man, with God, by his death and resurrection, and gives to all who believes in him, his Spirit of adoption, by which we can call God, Abba Father (Romans 8:15), making us co-heirs with him (Romans 8:17), and our prayer is that we will always be cognizant of God’s favor in Reuben whom we have inherited.

Our prayer for him is, as he grows up, he is first is a follower of Jesus Christ and secondly a Godly son to us and a Godly brother to his sibling Ittai; that he grows with wisdom, in stature and in favor of God and man (as Jesus did – Luke 2:52).

Points to ponder:
My beloved wife, Sangeetha and I have personally inherited God’s favor in our son, Reuben. But the whole world is eligible of personally inheriting God’s favor in his Only Begotten heavenly Son, Jesus Christ, if only they believe in Jesus. Have you inherited God’s favor in his Son, Jesus Christ?

Psalm 127:3 (KJV)
3 Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.

John 1:12 (KJV)
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Romans 8:15-17 (KJV)
15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

The gift of our Son

It is Reuben’s fourth birthday and as we celebrate this day of the Lord, the day in which He has made us (Sangeetha and I) glad, we reminisced on the wonderful past four years that the Lord has graciously merited unto both of us and thank Him for His gift of our Son, Reuben Abishai Paul (RAP). Our prayer today is that Reuben grows up as Jesus did (Luke 2:52), in Wisdom (mentally), in stature  (physically), in favor of God (Spiritually) and in favor of man (socially).

Specifically, we pray that Reuben has

  • the Spirit (soul) of Joseph to run from evil and seek hidden treasures from God’s revelations;
  • the zeal and heart of David that always sought after God;
  • the resolve of Daniel to not defile himself;
  • the strength of Samson;
  • the wisdom of Solomon;
  • the beauty of Esther;
  • the faith of the Centurion;
  • the boldness of Peter and Paul; and
  • the mind of Jesus Christ, meek and submissive to the will of God.

Psalm 127:3 informs us that children are a HERITAGE OF the LORD. The Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines heritage as something possessed as a result of one’s natural situation or birth. Note the verse does not read ‘from the LORD’, but ‘of the LORD’. In other word’s, children are God’s own possession naturally, and the fruit of the womb is a reward (Psalm 127:3) granted to earthly parents.

On one’s birthday we give the one to whom the day belongs (the birthday child) many gifts. With this day truly belonging to God, what is the gift that we can give Him?
The best gift that Sangeetha and I can give to our God is the gift that He has so bountifully given to us – our Son. This would be the true expression of our Love for him. It is His model that we must emulate. He loved us so greatly, that He gave us His Only begotten Son (Jesus Christ; John 3:16). Hannah’s dedication of her son that she was merited yielded in one of the greatest prophets that Israel (or for that fact, the world) saw. Likewise, we dedicate Reuben to be the servant of our loving Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Reuben is a possession of the LORD, rewarded unto us and we pray that He will be a cherished possession of God, beloved and instrumental in fulfilling God’s will in his life and in the lives of everyone’s he encounters.

Happy Birthday, Reuben, our beloved beloved beloved Son. Thank you Jesus for the gift of our Son.
