Man cursed (for the first time)

Genesis 4:11-12 reads “And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand; When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.”

Close scrutiny of these verses reveal a hidden truth in it. For the very first time in all of history, God pronounces a curse on man. God tells Cain, “And now art thou cursed …” and then tells him that he would need to labor and toil for the produce of the ground and that he shall be a fugitive and vagabond. Even when Adam, Cain’s father, disobeyed God, Adam (the man) was not cursed. Instead God cursed the ground for man’s sake. Then why did God curse Cain?
The answer is hidden in plain sight in this very chapter of the Bible although it warrants a little bit of diving deep to unravel it.
1. Cain was given a chance to do what is right and not let sin rule over him. (Genesis 4:7)
2. Cain willfully chose to ignore God’s warning and opportunity to do right, instead he talked his brother into leading him to slaughter. (Genesis 4:8)
3. Cain acted on his pre-mediated evil thoughts to sin against God and his brother and willfully sinned by murdering his own brother, (not loving his own – 1 John 3:11-12), ignoring the voice of the Holy Spirit of God. (Genesis 4:8)
4. Furthermore, when God asked Cain, what he had done, he lied to the Holy God, deserving death as did Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-10), instead of admitting (confessing) to his sin. (Genesis 4:9-10).
5. Finally, Cain goes one to counter-question God shrugging off his responsibility without any remorse or penitence. (Genesis 4:9)
But still, did Cain deserve to be cursed? The Bible states that anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit of God commits the unpardonable sin (Matthew 12:31). To blaspheme against the Holy Spirit of God is continued unbelief, rejecting the conviction of the Holy Spirit of God, who convicts the world of
– sin (Cain’s act of committing murder and letting sin rule over him),
– righteousness (found only in Jesus Christ – the Lamb of God, who was slain before the foundation of the World – for Adam, and Cain, and all of mankind) and
– judgment (Cain’s punishment).
Those who reject the conviction of the Holy Spirit have no means to Salvation and are hence accursed. This is why, God has to tell Cain, that cursed he was.

Points to ponder:
After we have the foreknowledge of the Salvation found solely in Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, if we continue to keep on sinning willfully, without remorse or repentance, there remains no more sacrifice by which we can be saved, but a fearful looking forward to the indignation of God (Hebrews 10:26-27). For by willfully sinning, we trample the Son of God under our foot, treating the Holy blood of his covenant of love and grace as an unholy thing (Hebrews 10:29).
If we, like Cain
– allow sin to rule over us
– willfully choose to ignore God’s warning and voice
– willfully act on our sinful lusts and desires, ignoring the voice of the Holy Spirit
– refuse to admit (confess) when convicted by the Holy Spirit
– shrug off our responsibilities to bring glory to God, without remorse or penitence
then we, like Cain
shall be cursed.

If we love God (Jesus), we shall keep his commandments (John 14:15; 1 John 5:3). This means that we shall not let sin rule over us (Genesis 4:7). And any one who does not love the Lord Jesus Christ is accursed i.e., let him be Anathema Maranatha (1 Corinthians 16:22).  Let it not be so, that God has to tell of us, “And now art thou cursed.”

29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

Psalm 1: Will not stand in judgment / congregation

Psalm 1:5 read “Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.” Because the ungodly are like chaff that the wind blows away to be burned in an unquenchable fire (Matthew 3:12), they will not stand in the judgment, but the verse does not stop there, it goes on to state that the sinner (willful) will not stand in the congregation of the righteous.

The Bible records that it is appointed unto man, once to die and after that the judgment (Hebrews 9:27). This means that all of the dead, which includes the believers (both spiritual and carnal) and unbelievers (ungodly) will stand before God and be judged (justified) based on their works (James 2:24) recorded in the books (Revelation 20:12-13). Then a book, which is the book of life is opened and the one whose name is not recorded in the book of life is cast into the lake of fire, which is second death (Revelation 20:14-15).

Who are those who will be cast into the lake of fire? It is not just the unbeliever (ungodly) who chooses to reject and despise Jesus, unrepentant of their sins, but it is also the believer who chooses to willingly live a sinful life (walking according to the flesh), despite the Spirit of grace (Hebrews 10:29). Jesus said, he will not blot out the name of the ones who overcome (who don’t deny Christ Jesus before men, by their lips or lives (Titus 1:16)), from the book of life (Revelation 3:5). implying that the names were recorded in the book of life, when they believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, but it can be blotted out, if they fall away in their faith and not overcome. The Bible is very clear that if a believer willfully lives a sinful life, and walks not according to Spirit but according to the flesh (Romans 8:1), after the knowledge of Salvation found in Jesus Christ, then there remains no more sacrifice by which that believer can be saved, because they have trampled under foot the Son of God, and counted the blood of his covenant, which brings about the remission of all sin, as an unholy thing (Hebrews 10:26-29). Such a carnal believer (sinner) can only look forward to a certain fearful judgment and fiery indignation, being condemned in the lake of fire as their names will be blotted out and this sinner will not stand in the congregation of the righteous.

Points to ponder:
Let us not be ungodly, but let us believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and repent of our sins and if we have believed in the Lord Jesus Christ and confessed of our sins, let us not continue to willfully sin against him, lest we be counted among those who are cast into the lake of fire and not be able to stand in the congregation of the righteous.

Psalm 1 :: Like the chaff which the wind drives away

Psalm 1:4 states that the ungodly are like the chaff that the wind drives away. Who are the ungodly? The ungodly are those who cast away the law of the LORD of hosts and who despise the word of the Holy One, Jesus Christ (Isaiah 5:24), despite the Spirit of grace (Hebrew 10:29).

While this may seem like a casual warning to those who are ungodly, this verse packs in it serious repercussions and a terrible fate to all who are not part of the Kingdom of God. Daniel 2:35 establishes that the kingdoms of the world will be broken into pieces and become like chaff and carried away by the wind, when Jesus’ kingdom is established to fill the whole earth. Whoever does not repent and become part of the kingdom of God which is at hand as Jesus asked to (Matthew 4:17) , will be carried by the wind that comes from the fan that is in Jesus’ hand and burned like chaff with an unquenchable fire (hell fire) but those who have believed in the Lord Jesus Christ and repented of their evil ways, shall be gathered like wheat into God’s kingdom when he returns to reign (Matthew 3:11-12).

Points to ponder:
The ungodly are like chaff that the wind drives away. The chaff is good for nothing but to be blown and burned. Let us lay hold on to the law of the LORD of hosts and let us not despise him, but let us believe in Jesus and repent, so that we are not counted as the ungodly!

34 Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.
35 Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.

10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
