Genesis 0:0 – In the Beginning

The first three verses in the Bible speak about the Trinity of God and Genesis 1:1 starts out as, “In the beginning God …” Now should there be a verse preceding that, what would that be? A youth in our Church once asked me, “Where did God come from?” This is actually a question that many scholars have sought to answer. And amidst my God given wisdom and finite human understanding, all I can do is to turn to the Bible to find the answer. Psalm 90:2 states that before the mountains were brought forth, or the earth and the world was formed i.e., before creation (as expressed in Genesis 1), from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.” In other words, the God of the Bible IS (not was, not will be), He simply IS. He is The I AM.

Points to ponder:
To ask “Where did God come from?” is like asking “Who is the Bachelor’s wife?” Just as someone who is a Bachelor, implies that he does not have a wife, so also to be God, implies that he does not have a beginning (nor an end). Man-made idols who are worshipped as gods have a beginning at the hands of man, unlike the God of the Bible who simply IS.

Jesus, God’s in human form was born amidst men. It was his birth but not his beginning, when he was born into the world he created, for he always IS. In the Beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God (John 1:1-2). Jesus is the Word of God, becoming flesh to dwell amongst men.
In the beginning, God …
In the beginning, was the Word …
In the beginning, God was the Word and the Word was God.
From everlasting to everlasting, Jesus is God.

Jesus wants to be born in your life. Believe in him to be born again. The God of the Bible IS. Are you HIS? If not, believe in Jesus and receive him to be accepted into, and to belong to God’s family.

Psalm 90:2 (KJV)
Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

Genesis 1:1 (KJV)
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

John 1:1-3 (KJV)
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
The same was in the beginning with God.
All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Ab ovo

Ab ovo (pronounced: \ab-OH-voh\) in Latin, means from the beginning.

Genesis 1:1 states that In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The Bible not only talks about God’s creation of nature in the beginning, but it also talks about you and me, who were made in the image of God, and chosen, from the very beginning, even before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4).

Points to ponder:
Before the foundation of the world, Jesus Christ existed and was foreordained (1 Peter 1:20) and He was the foundation under all of God’s creation (Colossians 1:16-17) and ab ovo, He chose us. But why did he choose us? He chose us ab ovo, so that we would be holy and without blame before him in love (Ephesians 1:4)

1 Peter 1:20 (KJV)
20 Who [Jesus Christ] verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

Ephesians 1:4 (KJV)
4According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love

Through The Bible

American clergyman and author, Phillips Brooks, who served as the Bishop of Massachusetts in the Episcopal Church during the late 1800s is known to have said the following about the Bible. “The Bible is like a telescope. If a man looks through his telescope, then he sees the worlds beyond; but if he looks at his telescope, then he does not see anything but that. The Bible is a thing to be looked through, to see that which is beyond; but most people only look at it; and so they see only the dead letter.” Dr. J. Vernon McGee in his radio ministry “Thru the Bible” exposited chapter by chapter and verse by verse with the mission of proclaiming the whole Word to the whole world. Brooks and Dr. McGee had the right perspective. The Bible is to be looked through.

From the page that begins with “In the beginning” to the final words which ends with “the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all”, it is a revelation of God’s great love story. In the beginning was the Word (John 1:1) a.k.a., the Word that became flesh and dwelt among man in the person of Jesus Christ (John 1:14) and the Word was with God and was God (John 1:1). Note how in the beginning, there is no mention of anyone other than the Godhead – God the Father, His Son Jesus Christ (the Word) and the Spirit of God (Genesis 1:1-2). We were not there in the beginning, but the good news is that all who believe in Jesus Christ will be there in the end. The final word in the Bible is the word “all” as the Bible ends with “the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all”, penultimate in position, only to affirm that so be it (Amen). The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ does not exclude anyone and is all inclusive. It is freely available to all; from the penitent sinner to the practicing saint.

When we look at the Bible, we merely see a dead letter of God to man. But when we look through the Bible, we see not only God’s story, but we see THE GRACE story. In other words, we see Jesus Christ revealed in the pages of the Bible.

Point(s) to ponder:
1. When you read the Bible, who do you see?
2. Someone said your life may be the only Bible someone may read. If this is true, if someone see through our lives, will they see Jesus Christ or are we about showcasing ourselves that people don’t see through us but at us and find our lives to be a dead letter?
