Labor not in vain – Steadfast, Still and Surmount

According to the United States Department of Labor, Labor Day, which is annually celebrated on the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of the country.

To those who are citizens of God’s kingdom (Philippians 3:20), we ought to be able to celebrate Labor Day as well, which is possible as long as we have made contributions with our life that last the test of fire (1 Corinthians 3:14-15). The labor that stands the test of fire is the labour that in not in vain in the Lord.

In order for our labor to not be in vain in the Lord, the Bible teaches us the principles that are recorded in 1 Corinthians 15:58. 1 Corinthians 15:58 reads “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
First, we need to be steadfast, that is we need to stand firm, which is only possible if the foundation we stand on is firm. There is no other foundation that is firmer than Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 3:11).
Second, we need to be still (Psalm 46:10), that is be unmoveable. We must not waver in our faith but be faithful, keeping the faith (Revelation 14:12; Acts 14:22) till we see Christ face to face.
Third, we need to surmount, that is abound, in the work of the Lord. With God, there is no unfinished business (Philippians 1:6) and God is able to make his grace abound toward us so that we may have sufficiency in all things and that we may abound to every good work (2 Corinthians 9:8).

Points to ponder:
Do you want your labor to not be in vain? In other words, are you steadfast, are you still and is your work surmounting? If Jesus Christ is not your foundation, I beseech you to believe and trust in him for when on Christ the Solid Rock, we Stand, we are steadfast and need not fear the sinking sand.

1 Corinthians 15:58 (KJV)
58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

2 Corinthians 9:8 (KJV)
8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:

Earth – rock to ROCK

One of the four elements is the Earth. The earth is a creation of God and in fact the very first verse in the Bible has a reference to the word ‘earth’. Genesis 1:1 states In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. The Bible also states in John 1:1 that In the beginning was the Word (referring to Jesus) and all things (including the earth) have been created by Him, and for Him (Colossians 1:16). The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it.

But have you wondered as to what the earth is made of? Take a child’s geography book to read about the composition of the earth and you are likely to find that the earth is primarily made up of a substance called Olivine, which is made up of Magnesium, Iron and Silica (Sand). Olivine is nothing other than a type of rock. In other words, one can say that the substance of the earth is made up of Olivine rock. The title for the show, “Third rock from the sun” couldn’t be more scientifically accurate, wherein the earth is referred to as a rock.

Jesus is THE ROCK on whom all of His creation can stand and not sink. Deuteronomy 32:4 avers that He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth (Jesus said I am the Truth) and without iniquity (Jesus was not only sinless but also blameless), just and right is he. THE ROCK (Jesus) said that if we listen to His words and also do them accordingly, we are likened to the wise man who built his house on the Rock and the storms that buffet against it shall not prevail. When the foundation is made up of rock, it is solid. He also referred to his apostle Peter as the rock on whom He will build his church (Matthew 16:18).

Jesus is the spiritual ROCK (1 Corinthians 10:4) whose work is not only perfect but complete (for He said It is finished). The substance of the earth is made up of Olivine rock. Our body was made from the earth but the question that remains is, if the substance of our bodies made up of the spiritual ROCK, Jesus Christ. Is Jesus THE ELEMENT of our lives? Is the foundation of our lives Jesus, THE ROCK. In other word’s, are we wise? We deceive ourselves if we merely hear his words and not do it (James 1:22).  Can The Rock (Jesus) say of you and me as He said of Peter, that you and I are the rock on which He can build His Church? Think about it.

Fascinating isnt it, that creation (the earth a.k.a. rock) embodies symbolically the STRONG and SOLID attributes of the Creator (THE ROCK). Those who commit their lives to follow Him will stand forever and never sink. All other ground is sinking sand.

Strong Foundation and Quality Materials

Ask any architect and they will tell you that in order for a super-structure to stand the tests of natural weather elements that onslaught the building, it is extremely important that the foundation on which the building stands is well laid, solid and strong. They will also tell you that in spite of the fact that there exists a strong foundation, buildings will succumb to the forces of the natural weather elements if the materials used to build them are not weatherproofed or up to quality standards.

In order for our lives to be able to withstand the tests of the world and its god, our lives must be laid on a solid and strong foundation as well. The good news is that there is a solid and strong foundation, in fact this is the only solid and strong foundation. The greater news is that this foundation is already laid, laid not by man, but by God and this foundation is Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 3:11). With the foundation laid, the question then is, whether the materials that we use to build our lives on, are up to the quality standards of God?

Are our lives of quality, according to the Spirit of God bearing the fruit of the Spirit? The fruit of the Spirit (Love, Joy, Peace, Longsuffering, Gentleness, Goodness, Faith, Meekness and Temperance) will stand the test of fire (the Holy Spirit) on the day when we need to give an account for all our actions, thoughts and deeds, because against such there is NO law. (Galatians 5:22-23).

1 Corinthians 3:10-15 (KJV)
10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.
11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
13 Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.
14 If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
15 If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV)
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
