Don’t become a blackhole

The book of Genesis affirms that God made the stars along with the two great lights that he created and set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth. (Genesis 1:16-17). Stars in the sky emit light. The Sun (one of God’s creation) in our Solar System is a star that emits light. In order for a star to be able to emit light, it must first have light within itself, that it can emit. A celestial phenomenon that is related to stars is referred to as the blackhole. This is also referred to as the death of a star. In this phenomenon, the gravitational forces within the star prevents anything from escaping, including light.

The Bible also teaches us that those who serve the Lord God in turning many to righteousness found in Jesus Christ alone, will be like stars for ever and ever and the wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament (Daniel 12:3). So who are the wise? Proverbs 11:30 states that one who winneth souls is wise. So followers of Jesus Christ who believe in him, that are faithful in his great commission of proclaiming the message of reconciliation with God, are like stars that God has recreated (as a new creature) in Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:17). We are expected to give the LIGHT of the World i.e., Jesus Christ, to the world. In order for us to be a star emitting Jesus, we must first have him within. We must have first believed and received him. Secondly, we must not let the gravitational forces of self and sin make us so self-centered that we prevent anything from escaping us, including Jesus, for in doing so, we become a blackhole.

Points to ponder:
Do you have the Light of the World (Jesus Christ) in your life? In order to have him shine in your life, all you need to do is just believe that he is the Light of God that was sent to shine on darkness.
If you have believed in him, then are you a star shining forth the Light of Christ from your life so that people living in darkness (without Christ and a relationship with God) can see The Light that dispels all darknesses?
Or, are you a blackhole, consumed by self and sin, self-centered, ineffective and dead, even though you are alive (Revelation 3:1)?

The first three verses in the Bible (Genesis 1:1-13) read as follows:
1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

The first verse speaks of God, the Father, the Creator – the first person of the Trinity.
The second verse speaks of the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit – the third person of the Trinity.
The third verse does not explicitly speak of God, the Son, Jesus Christ, but speaks of light that was spoken of God to shine on the darkness (verse 2). Colossians 1:15 refers to Jesus as the firstborn of all creation. While the English transliteration of the word firstborn can be misleading, implying a birth and thus a finite beginning, the Greek word used was prototokos meaning first to beget (protos = first and tikto = to beget), also implying first in time or first in priority. Jesus is the Only Begotten Son of God, the firstbegotten of all creation. The Bible refers to Jesus, as the light that has been seen by the people sitting in darkness (Matthew 4:16) and Jesus refers to himself as the light of the world (John 8:12). Using these references, I feel convinced that the light mentioned in the third verse is speaking of Jesus Christ, God, the Son – the second person of the Trinity.

In other words, the first three verses in the Bible is about the One True God in Three Persons.

Points to ponder:
Are you still in darkness or have you believed in Jesus Christ (God, the Son), so that he, the light of the world, has shined on your life driving away the darkness of sin and death. When we believe in Christ Jesus, the Spirit of God (God, the Holy Spirit) is poured out on us to seal you until redemption, to God’s praise and glory, as he has promised (Ephesians 1:12-14) and this Holy Spirit of God that is given is a Spirit of Adoption, by whom, we can address God (God, the Father) as Abba, Father (Romans 8:15). From Creation to Salvation and eventual glory of God, it is all about the Trinity of God, starting with the first three verses in the Bible. Are you in darkness or are you in the light?

Jesus Impersonator :: Light

When iniquity was found in Lucifer (Satan) who sought to take the place of God (Ezekiel 28:6,9,15), Satan was thrown out of heaven along with the angels whom he deceived to rebel against God, and since then Satan has been trying to take the place of God. He uses the deception of impersonation to deceive many. We must therefore watch out and pray and be on the alert (sober and vigilant) so that we are not deceived (1 Peter 4:7).

Jesus said, “I am the Light of the world and whoever follows me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” (John 8:12). But Satan impersonates Jesus the Light of the world, by transforming himself into an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14).

Points to ponder:
If we follow Jesus, the LIGHT of the world, we will not live a life of sin, walking in darkness, and will have the light of life in us.
If we follow Satan, the Jesus Impersonator as the light of the world, we will continue to live a life of sin, walking in darkness and will have the darkness of death in us. Marvel not!

The word of God :: Guide

The Bible is a fascinating book, inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right (2 Timothy 3:16; NLT). It is the written word of God.

From the Bible, we learn that the word of God is a GUIDE – a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. When you walk through life’s darkest alleys (such as abuse, alcoholism, addiction, depression, etc), and you feel lonely and lost with no one to show you the way to Peace, you can count on the Bible and turn to it to show you the light on your’s life’s path – for in it you will find the Light of the world (John 8:12), Jesus Christ, who is THE WAY (John 14:6)

Points to ponder:
Are you lonely and lost and finding yourself in one of life’s darkest alleys — if so, tarry no further, but turn to the scripture (the Bible) to be the lamp unto your feet and light unto your path.

Winning Wars :: Lamp and Trumpet

The book of Judges, in chapter 7, records a fascinating account of the Lord leading an army of 300 men with Gideon as their leader, against the Midianite army whose number is likened to be like that of the sands of the sea (Judges 7:7,12). Interestingly, instead of arming the men with weapons of warfare, Gideon gives to each man, to hold in his hand a pitcher with a lamp within and a trumpet. Upon reaching the vicinity of the enemy camp, the trumpets are sounded, the pitchers are broken and each man holds in his left hand a lamp and in his right the trumpet to blow proclaiming, the sword of the Lord, and victory in won.

As an earthern vessel (pitcher) (2 Corinthians 4:7), we have in us, the Light (lamp) of the world, Jesus Christ (John 9:5). Just as the pitchers were broken, we must be broken (put on the mind of humility) so that the Light of the world, shall shine forth over the darkness of sin and death. We must also take in our hands, the trumpet to sound and proclaim the sword of the Lord, which is the word of God (Ephesians 6:17). In other words, we must be vocal of our faith in Jesus Christ.

For victory in the war that happens in heavenly realms, we must have Jesus Christ (lamp) in us (pitchers) and not be afraid to proclaim Him with booming (trumpet) sound.

What life? I’m in the dark here. You understand? I’m in the dark.

A movie, that I can watch over and over again is Scent of a Woman. To say that the performance by Al Pacino (who plays the character of a blind Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade) and Chris O’Donnell (who plays the character of Charlie Simms, a prep school student who takes up a weekend job of being the Colonel caretaker) to be anything short of fantastic would certainly be an understatement. In one of the scenes, the Lt. Col. has decided to end his life by shooting himself, but is stopped and scolded by Charlie. The conversation that occurs is something as follows.

Charlie Simms: So you messed up all right? So what? So everybody does it. Get on with your life would ya?
Lt. Col. Frank Slade: [screaming] What Life? I got no life! I’m in the dark here. You understand? I’m in the dark!

It dawned on me from just those two lines, that there is so much we can learn to apply in our Christian walk.

  1. First, everybody messes up – We are all sinners. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23)
  2. Second, We need to get on with our life. The failures in our life don’t define us and there is hope for all. Jesus Christ is the only hope for all. (1 Timothy 1:1)
  3. Third, there are many who question as to what Life is all about. They are screaming – What Life? and feel that there is no life!
  4. Fourth, accordingly to Lt. Col. Frank Slade, his blindness meant that he was in the dark and to be in the dark means that there is no life. In other words, those who can see, can see light and in light is Life. The parallel from this is the most important. There are many who are blinded in their minds (spiritual eyes). The god of this world (Satan) has blinded the minds of many who believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. And when they are still blind, they are in the dark. Jesus came so that the blind can see (Luke 4:18). He proclaimed that He is the light of the world and they that believe in Him and follow Him (interesting isn’t it that it is the blind that usually follow) shall not walk in darkness anymore, but have in them the light of Life (John 8:12), life eternal (John 3:16).

Point(s) to ponder:

  1. Are you one those who was blind, but now can see? It is better to be the blind who can see than to be the seeing who is blind!
  2. When people around us are screaming, “What Life?”, “I’m in the dark”, “Do you Understand?”, do we really understand their state?
  3. Are we willing to show them the Light of the world that can redeem them from darkness and death into light and life (or) Are we hiding this glorious light by putting it under the bushels of our sinful and selfish lives?

Dispelling shadows

Recently, I noticed our darling son, Reuben, who is three month shy of turning four, try to stamp out his shadow and when I asked him what he was doing, he said, that he did not like his shadow and did not want it to follow him. I explained to him that there was nothing he could do about it, until it dawned on me that the only way that he could get rid of the shadow was to be the source of light himself. As long as light shines on him, his shadow will follow, but when light shines from him, his shadows that follow him will be dispelled.

In our walk with Christ, it is no different. In our very lives, we have many shadows that follow. The shadow of self (personal desires over God’s), the shadow of sin, and the shadow of death (sin’s wages) are lingering shadows that become evident when the light of the world, Jesus Christ, shines on us, giving us the knowledge of the glory of God (2 Corinthians 4:6). And when we accept Him, He comes into our life, and His radiance dispels self, sin and death. How? We become a new creation (dispelling self; 2 Corinthians 5:17); We are imputed righteousness (dispelling sin; Romans 3:22); We have eternal life (dispelling death; John 3:16).

When Jesus Christ shines on our lives, we can observe the shadows around us, but when Jesus shines from within us, all shadows are gone. The only way that we can get rid of the shadows is to hold within ourselves the very source of light, Jesus Christ. Christ in us, is the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27).
