The Sons of Jacob :: Reuben (and Jesus Christ)

Reuben was the firstborn of the sons of Jacob. He was born to Leah and Jacob. Reuben means “See a son”. He was so named by his mother who felt that surely the Lord had looked upon her affliction of being unloved (hated) by her husband.

Points to ponder:
God looked upon the affliction on all of mankind brought about by man’s disobedience (sin) and sent his only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. The Lord sees i.e., his eyes are in every place beholding the evil and the good (Proverbs 15:3; Jeremiah 16:17), but the question is, do you see the Son of God in Jesus? (Matthew 17:5). O taste and see that the Lord God is a good God (Psalm 34:8), who sees the affliction of man.

32 And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Surely the Lord hath looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me.

Family Relationship :: Woman, behold thy son! … Behold thy mother!

Jesus’ third saying from the Cross was directed to his mother and to his beloved disciple who was standing by her. To her, he said, “Woman, behold thy son!” and to him, he said, “Behold thy mother!” In this saying, Jesus takes two people who are unrelated and establishes a family relationship (mother – son) between them.

Points to ponder:
To all who receive Jesus and who believe in his name, he gave them the power to be called the sons of God (John 1:12) and Jesus expressed that whoever does the will of God his Father, is his brother and sister and mother (Matthew 12:50). In other words, Jesus relates those who are unrelated into a family – the very family of God. On the Cross, Jesus established a family relationship. Today, he seeks to establish your relationship and mine with God himself. Have you tasted the joy of God’s salvation? O taste and see (behold) that the Lord God is good (Psalm 34:8) wanting you to become part of his family. Do you believe? Behold …

God’s I Will

Genesis 12: 1-2 lists out three of God’s “I will” statements to Abram, which are:
I will show you (Genesis 12:1)
I will make you into a great nation (Genesis 12:2)
I will bless you and make your name great (Genesis 12:2).

Today, God’s three “I will” statements to you and me, who have believed in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, are the same.
God will show us … and we are asked to “O taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 34:8). i.e., the Salvation of God shown to us in and through Jesus, who is good.
God will make us … into a new nation, for whoever is in Christ Jesus, he is made a new creature (2 Corinthians 5:17) … made into a holy nation, a peculiar people, who will sing forth the praises of him (1 Peter 2:9), who is a great God (Psalm 86:10).
God will bless us … for we are blessed in Jesus (John 20:29) and our names are made great by being engraved in the palm of his hands (Isaiah 49:16)

Points to ponder:
Have you tasted and seen the Salvation of the Lord in Jesus Christ?
Have you been made into a new creature, by believing in Jesus Christ?
Have you been blessed in Jesus Christ?

1 Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:
2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
