Nahum 1:7 reads, “The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble, and he knoweth them that trust in him.”

Many times, in Psalm 136, we are counseled to give thanks to the LORD for he is good (Psalm 136:1-26). Jesus said, that he is the good Shepherd and he knows his sheep (John 10:14). Sheep trust their Shepherd to keep them safe, secure and satisfied for the good Shepherd leads his sheep by still (peaceful) waters and green (productive) pastures. Sheep that wander away are lost but the good Shepherd comes seeking for the lost (Luke 15:4-7). Many a times, like sheep, we wander away from the presence of God and get lost, but because the Lord is good, and he knows who are his (2 Timothy 2:19), he instructs sinners (us) in his ways (Psalm 25:8). Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness (2 Timothy 2:19).

God is a strong hold – he is a strong foundation and his solid foundation stands firm (2 Timothy 2:19). He holds on strongly to those who trust in him amidst the tempestuous storms of troubles, that buffet against their lives. Because God is the stronghold in the times of troubles, the Lord is the Salvation to the righteous (Psalm 37:39), who trust in him and who believe in his name. When the shepherd boy David faced the giant Goliath, he went forth holding on to the name of the Lord (1 Samuel 17:45) and God held on to him as he faced the giant, giving him victory, which in human minds seemed implausible and impossible.

Points to ponder:
Jesus is the good Shepherd coming in search of you and me. Only in him, can we be safe, secure and satisfied. We who confess his name, must turn away from wickedness and hold on strongly to him. He will never leave us nor forsake us and he will hold on to us strongly, and is therefore our Salvation, no matter how gigantic our troubles may be.
O taste and see that the Lord is good (Psalm 34:8), bless is the man who trusteth in God, for God knows them that trust in him. Does God know you?

Genesis 3 records the account of the fall of man from the glory of God, for Adam and Eve, willfully sinned by eating of the tree of knowledge of good and of evil, which God has specifically commanded them not to. The Bible states that when Satan, the serpent, beguiled Eve, and when she saw the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and desirable for gaining wisdom, she took and ate it and gave it to her husband who was with her and he ate it as well. Through this act of seeing, taking, and giving, man (and woman) disobeyed God and brought death into the world (1 Corinthians 15:21).

The Bible counsels us to taste and see that the Lord is good (Psalm 34:8) and that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). When we see the God of the world manifested fully in his Son Jesus Christ (Colossians 2:9), through his inspiration (2 Timothy 3:16) and his Word (John 1:1), do we desire him and take him and commune (eat) with him (Revelation 3:20). Jesus said that we must remember his death and resurrection, in communion (1 Corinthians 11:24), but we must not just stop there. We must give (share) him with the others who dont know him, so that they may have life – life abundant (John 10:10) and eternal (John 3:16).

Points to ponder:
She saw, she took, she gave … and death came into the world.
Do we see, take and give … the Light of the world (John 8:12) to those who are dying?

Beautiful and Fruitful (Tree)

Genesis 2:9 states that the Lord God made every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food to grow out of the ground. In other words, this verse describes that the Lord God made beautiful (pleasant to see) and fruitful (good for food) trees to grow out of the ground. Literally taken, this means that all that God planted was beautiful and needed for the sustenance of life.

Points to ponder:
The Bible counsels us to taste and see that the Lord is good (Psalm 34:8). In other words, the Lord is pleasant to see and good for communion, just like the beautiful and food bearing trees, God planted. The Bible also teaches us that man shall not live by bread (physical food) alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4). Jesus is THE Word of God who became flesh and dwelled amongst men (John 1:1, 14). Jesus is pleasant to all who seek to see him with eyes of faith and is the Word of God, good for communion (food) and necessary for the sustenance of life – eternal life with God (John 3:16). Have you seen (experienced) Jesus? Do you have communion with God?

Making God sick

Do you know that you can make God sick, sick to his stomach, so much so that you can make him throw up? The Bible counsels us to not be lukewarm (neither hot nor cold for God), for in being lukewarm, we are ditasteful to him and he will vomit us out of his mouth. In other words, we make God sick by being lukewarm.

Points to ponder:
O taste and see that the Lord is good and blessed in the man/woman that trust in God (Psalm 34:8). But once you have tasted the goodness of God, be not lukewarm, so that he can taste our lives and see that we are good. Imagine for a moment, as to how you would taste in the mouth of God.

The book of Galatians gives a glimpse of who Jesus is in the N.T.

The book of Galatians is well known for its reference to the Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22), but close introspection of this text in connection with other verses in the Bible, reveals that it is not just character traits that one must aspire to produce, but a hidden treasure that Jesus Christ himself, is THE FRUIT OF The HOLY SPIRIT of God. Let us dive deep. Galatians 4:22 lists love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance as the fruit of the spirit.

Love:
John 3:16 is a expression of God’s love for mankind and 1 John 3:16 states that this is how we know what love is, because Jesus laid down his life for us and 1 John 4:8 states that God is love and since Jesus is God, Jesus is Love; love personified.

Joy:
Philippians 4:13 states that we can do all things through Christ who gives us strength and Nehemiah 8:10 tells us that the joy of the Lord is our strength. This means that Jesus Christ is the Joy of the Lord, who gives us strength, through whom, we can do all things. Jesus is Joy; joy personified.

Peace:
Isaiah 9:6 enlist as one of the titles for Jesus, the title, “Prince of Peace” and Hebrews 5:6, informs us that Jesus Christ is the priest forever in the order of Melchizedek (which means King of peace). Not only in Jesus Christ, the prince of peace, but he is also the priest of peace and king of peace. Jesus is Peace; peace personified.

Longsuffering:
Nehemiah 9:7 states that God is ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness and forsakes not. Jesus is a patient God who is gracious, plenteous in mercy, and slow to anger. Jesus was patient for his time to come. When his time had not yet come, to be glorified as God’s son, he told his mother, “Woman, my hour (time) has not yet come” (John 2:4) and his brethren the same (John 7:6), but when his time of fulfilling God’s work of Salvation as God’s son had come, he told God the Father, “my hour (time) has come” (John 17:1). Jesus is Patient (for God’s time to come); patience personified.

Gentleness:
2 Corinthians 10:1 establishes the fact that Jesus Christ is gentle. Jesus is Gentle; gentleness personified.

Goodness:
Psalm 34:8 asks us to taste and see that the Lord (Jesus) is good and Jesus himself expressed in John 10:11 that he is the Good Shepherd. Jesus is Good; goodness personified.

Faith:
The definition of faith according to Hebrews 11:1 is that faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. Colossians 1:27 establishes the fact that Jesus is the hope of glory and Colossians 1:15 establishes the fact that Jesus is the image of the invisible God. Jesus is not only faithful, but he is Faith; faith personified.

Meekness:
2 Corinthians 10:1 establishes the fact that Jesus is meek. Jesus himself said in Matthew 11:29, that he was meek, when he asked us to take his yoke upon ourselves and to learn from him. Jesus is meek and lowly of heart and all who take up his yoke and learn from him will find rest for their souls. Matthew 21:5 also portrays Jesus as the meek King who comes to us riding on a colt. Jesus is Meek; meekness personified.

Temperance:
Temperance means restraint or self-control. Come to think of it, the first encounter of the devil with the Lord Jesus as the devil tempts Jesus (Luke 4:4) could have been the devil’s last, but the devil and his angels are reserved for a day of judgment (Matthew 25:41). Jesus was in self-control in dealing with temptation as he used the Scripture, the Scripture he had come to fulfill. In fact, Jesus said that at his request, God would send him over twelve legions of angels to fight for him, but if he did so, the Scripture would not be fulfilled (Matthew 26:52-54) and he did not do so in self-control. Jesus is Temperance; temperance personified.

In Galatians, Jesus is the FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT.

22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
