God is El Shaddai

Juxtaposing Jacob’s renaming, the second time, in Bethel (Genesis 35:10), God reveals a name by which Jacob is to know him by. God identifies himself as God Almighty which in Hebrew is El Shaddai (Genesis 35:11).

When Jacob wrestled with God, God asked him his name and Jacob, who had used his brother Esau’s name to lie and deceive his earthly father, had to confess and admit that he was Jacob (Genesis 32:27-28). Then Jacob asked for God’s name but did not receive an answer (Genesis 32:29). Now, God does not ask for Jacob’s name (again) and instead renames him (again). And what is more noteworthy is that though unsolicited, God reveals to Jacob that He shall be known to him as God Almighty i.e., El Shaddai. It is the same name by which God had identified Himself to Abraham (Genesis 17:1). Israel was to experience the almighty omnipotent essence of God. Later God would make a mention of this to Moses, when he will reveal to Moses, of his essence of just being, not just as being God Almighty, but All-all-things (i.e., All sufficient one) as he will reveal his name as the Great I AM (Yahweh) (Exodus 6:2-3).

Points to ponder:
The word Shaddai appears forty-eight times in the King James Version of the Bible as illustrated. Twice it is rendered as Almighty God, five times as God Almighty, and forty-one times as just Almighty. The word Shaddai always renders as Almighty and we need to be reminded of God as Almighty in our walk as Christians (after a name change reflecting we belong to Christ); God will mention to Moses that He is the Great I AM (Yahweh which when rendered under the constraints of linguistics as the All Sufficient One) and for one to recognize that He is Yahweh, they must also recognize him as God Almighty (El Shaddai).

Eventually, everything centers around Jesus Christ who said that all power in heaven and on earth is given to Him (Matthew 28:18). The fullness of God dwells in Him (Colossians 2:9). Jesus and God the Father (Yahweh) are one in essence (John 10:30). Jesus is God Almighty. Jesus is El Shaddai. Have you identified Jesus as the El Shaddai in your life? In Christ, you and I can experience the almighty omnipotent essence of God! Do you believe in him? Jesus alone is Almighty and All Sufficient for you!

Genesis 35:9-15 (KJV)
10 And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel.
11 And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins;

Christian Acronym :: Y.M.C.A

Many are familiar that the acronym YMCA stands for Young Men’s Christian Association, which was founded in 1844 by twenty-two year old George Williams and 11 other friends as a refuge of Bible study and prayer for young men seeking escape from the hazards of life on the streets. Sadly today the far reaching objective of the founding fathers, has been replaced by one that is myopic to help people and communities to learn, grow and thrive, with no reference published in their objective to the Bible as the original fathers intended. Social responsibility over soul responsibility seems to be the focus.

As a Christian acronym, what could Y.M.C.A stand for? To be inclusive of the elderly and the non-male gender, Y.M.C.A as a Christian acronym could stand for YHWH’s Missionary Christian Association (Y.M.C.A). First, we are YHWH (pronounced Yahweh’s) i.e., we belong to the Almighty Omnipotent, Omniscient and Omnipresent God (Exodus 20:3). Second, we are all Missionaries on a mission, both men and women, young and old (Matthew 28:19-20). Third, we are Christians. To be a Christian is to belong to Christ i.e., Christ-Ones (1 Corinthians 3:23). And Finally, we are an Association. We are to be grafted (associated) with Christ first (John 15:1-8) and second with all others who are believers, united in one accord (1 Corinthians 1:10).

Are you and I in YHWH’s Missionary Christian Association?

Matthew 28:20 (KJV)
19
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

1 Corinthians 3:23 (KJV)
23 And ye are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s [YHWH’s].

1 Corinthians 1:10 (KJV)
10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

Jesus in the OT :: 1st Chronicles

The book of 1st Chronicles gives us a glimpse of who Jesus is in the Old Testament (O.T).

The book of 1st Chronicles can be broken down into

  1. Royal Line of David or genealogical account (Chapters 1-9).
  2. Reign of David (Chapter 10-29)

Starting with the death and removal of David’s main opponent, Saul, God establishes his elect. Saul was appointed by man, David was elected by God.
So for those in leadership position, a note to consider, have you been appointed by man or have you been chosen by God. This determines the longetivity and impact of of your reign.

But we are talking about Christ in the Chronicles, what does 1st Chronicles have to say about Christ. To understand this, we need to go to the very last chapter, Chapter 29:11 Where David makes this promulgation about the OMNIPOTENCY of God. Thine O LORD, is the greatness, and the power and the glory, and the victory and the majesty: for ALL that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom O LORD, and though are exalted as HEAD ABOVE ALL. (1 Chronicles 29:11). In other words, David was proclaiming, O LORD thou art an An Omnipotent God. How does this tie into Jesus? We need to go to Philippians 3:20-21 which records Saviour Jesus Christ, from Heaven subdues ALL things unto Himself.

In 1st Chronicles, Jesus The One and Only Omnipotent God.

Chapters 1- 9 : Royal Line of David (genealogical account)

In these times of economical downturns, one way to save money, especially for expectant parents is to read the book of Chronicles. You don’t need to invest in buying a book like “The 100 best Baby Names” or something of that sort. Read 1st Chronicles.

For those who are from the North, you have Azubah (2:18) – Amitabh’s movie

Chapters 1- 9 gives the genealogical account of the royal line of David

Chapters 10-29the Reign of David.

We need to go to the very last chapter,

Chapter 29:11

Where David makes this promulgation about the OMNIPOTENCY of God.

1 Chronicles 29:11

11. Thine O LORD, is the greatness, and the power and the glory, and the victory and the majesty (GPG-VM): for ALL that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom O LORD, and though are exalted as HEAD ABOVE ALL.

In other words, David was proclaiming, O LORD thou art an An Omnipotent God.

How does this tie into Jesus?

We need to go to Philippians 3:20-21 – Saviour Jesus Christ, from Heaven who subdues ALL things unto Himself.

Philippians 3:20-21

20. For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.

21. Who shall change our vile bodies, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to SUBDUE ALL THINGS unto HIMSELF (note not under Himself, but unto Himself).

Behold, Jesus The One and Only Omnipotent God.
