Offensive Jesus (and Christians)

An individual that I invited to the Christmas party at our place, wrote in response, “As an agnostic, I find what you do, of bringing Jesus to our work community offensive and so I am not interested in attending.” Pastor and Teacher John MacArthur, Jr., in his book Found: God’s Will, writes “If the truth offends, then let it offend. People have been living their whole lives in offense to God; let them be offended for a while.

Agnostics, Atheists and Anti-theists and for that matter all those who reject the gospel of Jesus Christ and who rebel against him, distorting the Scripture with their own foolish and empty egocentric views, find the work of the followers of Jesus Christ offensive. But those of us, who share the word of truth, of The Truth, Jesus Christ, should not be surprised when our work and words are offensive. When Jesus asserted that He was the only means to Salvation and anyone who refuses to believe and partake in communion with him, will not inherit eternal life, some of his disciples were offended and they deserted him, which led him to ask “Do my words offend you?” (John 6:61). Yes, the work of Christ is hard and the words (preaching) of the Cross is a hard saying that is deemed as foolishness unto those who are perishing but to those who are saved, it is the Power of God (1 Corinthians 1:18).

Points to ponder:
Jesus was deemed to be offensive when He preached Salvation. Are you and I also considered to be offensive when we preach the Cross, which is the word of Truth (2 Timothy 2:15); the words of everlasting life (John 6:68)? As Christians let us be unafraid of mere men who can do nothing to us, when we have the Lord on our side (Psalm 118:6) and continue to preach the Cross of Christ that brings everlasting life to all who believe. The word of God is The Sword of the Spirit – an offensive weapon in the spiritual armor (Ephesians 6:17) and when a Sword is wielded correctly, it will cut/divide those who are in Christ from those who aren’t. If the truth offends, then let it offend.

John 6:60-61, 66-69 (KJV)
60 Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?
61 When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?

66
From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.
67 Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?
68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.
69 And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.

Qualified by God?

A very famous one-liner that preachers often quote when soliciting a response of commitment to serve in the ministry of Jesus Christ is “God does not call the qualified, but qualifies the called.” Abraham was old, Jacob was a cheater, Moses was a stammerer,  Rahab was a prostitute, Ruth was a Gentile, Gideon was of the weakest clan, David was an adulterer, Paul was a murderer, Peter denied, Thomas doubted and Lazarus was dead and yet God used each one to be of service to him and to show others his glory.

But, have you ever wondered as to what it means to be qualified by God? According to the Scripture, to be qualified by God is to be made meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light (Colossians 1:12). In other word’s, to be qualified by God is to be co-heirs with Jesus Christ (Romans 8:17), that only comes from believing in Jesus Christ, for to all them that receive him and believe in his name, He (God) gave them the power to be called the sons of God (John 1:12).

Points to ponder:
Are you Qualified by God? In other words, are you a child of God, co-heirs with Christ and a heir with God, made meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints? To become a child, one must be born again which comes by believing on the name of Jesus Christ. To be qualified by God is to become his child and then co-heirs with Christ and heirs of God’s inheritance in the kingdom of light. Are you Qualified by God?

Colossians 1:12
12 and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. (NIV)
12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: (KJV)

John 1:12 (KJV)
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Christian Senses :: To Touch

The Bible says that Jesus touched the lepers, whom the society in his times, had branded as untouchables and unclean and healed them. The Bible also says that there were many who sought to touch him for when they did, the power (virtue) of God and healing flowed from him (Luke 16:19; Luke 8:46). Interestingly, the Bible also records that Jesus allowed sinners to touch him and he forgave their sins (Luke 7:38-50).

Christians are not those who have been born into Christian families, but those who have been born again in God’s family, because they have believed in Jesus Christ, the Son of God and trusted Him to be their Lord and Master. In other words, Christians are those who have reached out and touched Jesus and received the forgiveness of their sins. Christians are those who have been touched by the Lord Jesus Christ and made clean and whole, healed from the leprosy of sin. But the power of touch does not stop there. Christians have been touched so that they can do that which is commanded of them which is to direct others to the touch of Christ (2 Thessalonians 3:3-5) as they await His return.

Point(s) to ponder:
1. Have you reached out to touch Christ to experience and enjoy the power of God that brings about the forgiveness of your sin and total restoration?
2. Have you experienced the touch of Christ which makes you clean and holy?
3. If you/I have been touched by Christ Jesus, are you directing others to His touch?

2 Thessalonians 3:3-5 (KJV)
3 But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.
4 And we have confidence in the Lord touching you, that ye both do and will do the things which we command you.
5 And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ.
