Noah – a purpose driven man

An individual of purpose is one who does what is intended and expected of him or her, in their life so that when their life comes to an end, they can be assured that they have fulfilled their whole duty. Ecclesiastes 12:13 states that “to fear God and keep his commandments is the whole duty of man.”

Hebrews 11:7 says that Noah was moved with fear and he kept God’s commandments, for he did all that God commanded him to (Genesis 6:22; Genesis 7:5), which means his life was a purpose driven life.

Points to ponder:
Noah was a purpose driven man and he fulfilled God’s purposes fully, not partially. How about you and me? Can it be said of you and me that we fear God and that we do ALL that God commands us to.

One of the definitions in Merriam Webster’s for the word ‘Sanctify’ is ‘to set apart to a sacred purpose.’ The Bible says that we are to be transformed (set apart) and not be conformed to the patterns of this world (Romans 12:2). The Bible also affirms that God has set apart the godly for himself (Psalm 4:3). The sacred purpose is God himself and our purpose in our life is be his followers (Ephesians 5:1). In other words, those who have believed in Jesus Christ are set apart (sanctified) by God, exclusively for God.

Points to ponder:
We are exclusively God’s when we believe in his Son, Jesus Christ. The question is, ‘Is God exclusively yours?’

The Boys Scout of America highlights that to be a Scout is to be in a profession with a purpose. But what does the word “Scout” mean and would we be able to consider Jesus as a Scout? Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines the word “Scout” as “to find by making a search”.

Jesus likened himself to be the Good Shepherd (John 10:11) who would go in search of the one lost sheep and not return until he has found it. In this regard, Jesus is The Scout, whose purpose is to find those who are lost without God. Jesus is The Scout with a purpose.

Points to ponder:
If you are lost without God, take solace, for Jesus The Scout is searching for you and wishes to find you. Hide not from him, but be ye found by Him!

In Christian, To obey or not to obey

To be peculiar implies distinctiveness from the normal or usual or in other words “special”. To be a treasure implies someone or something of great worth and value or in other words “priceless”.

The Bible in the New Testament says that those who believe in Jesus Christ will be a peculiar people. They will be a chosen generation, a holy nation, royal priests; a peculiar people unto the Lord (1 Peter 2:9) But believers ought to recognize that there is a pre-requisite to being a peculiar people, of and for the Lord, and this conditional requirement is stated explicitly in the Old Testament. The requirement is to first obey totally. The Bible says in Exodus 19:5-6 that total (not partial) obedience to God is what would make God’s people peculiar (special over all other nations) and priceless (His very own treasure).

Points to ponder:
Do you/I want to be peculiar and priceless? Do you and I want to be distinct and of great worth? Do you/I want to be God’s chosen royal priests? If yes, then we must obey, not partially but totally (fully). To fear God and keep his commandments is the whole (and sole) duty of man (Ecclesiastes 12:13)

Purpose driven life

When asked, as to how he would spend the time, if he had only forty-eight hours to live, actor Will Rogers promptly replied “One day at a time.” Chief Justice Oliver W. Holmes had the same response, “One day at a time” when asked at age ninety he was asked as to how he would spend his life, should he have to relive it all over again. Dr. Spencer Johnson in his acclaimed book, entitled the “The Present” ends his book by stating that the main character of the book gives herself in the end “The PRESENT” but captures that living in The Present, learning from The Past, and planning for The Future is not all there is. It is only when you live with PURPOSE and respond to what’s important about the Present, Past and Future, that it all has meaning. Living with purpose means not just knowing what to do, but why.

Our Christian walk with God must be a life of purpose. It should be a purpose driven life. We must not only know what we ought to do, but we must also know why. The Bible teaches us what we ought to do. It tells us that the whole duty of man(kind) is to fear (revere) God and keep His commandments (Ecclesiastes 12:13), loving God and in total surrender and loving man as they would themselves. But why must we do this? We must totally surrender to God revering Him and following His commandments, because He [Jesus] totally surrendered everything He had, making Himself of no reputation to be the sacrifice for our sins and to save us from eternal death and separation from God (Philippians 2:7). We must love Him, because He first loved us (1 John 4:19) and we must do so until our time on earth is done or his return, whichever is earlier. This may seem like a daunting task, but when we seek God’s guidance, asking Him to teach us to make each day count, “One day at a time”, our life’s journey that may seem long, in reality would not be.

An inscription on an ancient sun-dial impressed the following:
“Time WAS is past — thou canst it not recall.
Time IS thou hast — employ thy portion small.
Time FUTURE is not, and may never be.
Time PRESENT is the only time for thee!”

Let us give ourselves the present of the Present, and pray that God teaches us to number our days and make them count.
