Wanna be prosperous? :: Serve God

Disciple: “What must I do to be prosperous?”
God: “Serve!”

In the book of Job, the Bible records that those who obey and serve God, returning from their sinfulness (as God has commanded), will spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures (Job 36:10-11). Prosperity comes from obedience and service. There are many who have  believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who obeyed God and repented of their sins, but seldom are they in service to God.

Points to ponder:
Wanna be prosperous? Serve God as he did. Jesus laid the model down for us and he expressed it by saying, “I did not come to be served (ministered) but to serve (minister) and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Matthew 28:20). Would you consider yourself as prosperous? In other words, “Are you sacrificially serving God after you have believed and repented of your sins?”.

10 He openeth also their ear to discipline, and commandeth that they return from iniquity.
11 If they obey and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures.

What does the Lord require of us?

We have all heard and sometimes we ourselves have expressed one or more of the following, “I am seeking God’s will in my life”, “I am not sure what the purpose of my life is”, “I wish I knew what the perfect and pleasing will of God is for me”, “I am not sure what God wants me to do”, etc. So what does God want us to do? In other words, what does the Lord our God require of us?

Deuteronomy 10:12-13 gives us the answer as to what the Lord our God requires of us. It is

  1. To fear him
  2. To walk in all his ways
  3. To love him
  4. To serve him with all our heart and with all our soul
  5. To keep his commandments and his statutes

Point(s) to ponder:

  1. Which of the above requirement(s) do you/I not meet?
  2. Are we selective followers of Jesus or do we totally submit to his Lordship, walking in ALL his ways and serving him with ALL our heart and with ALL our soul. In other words, are we All-in-All His?

12 And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,
13 To keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?

Seek, Save and Serve – Attitude of servitude

Jesus came not only to Seek the lost and to Save the lost (Luke 19:10), but also to serve God and His people. Jesus served God and none other as is evident in his confrontation with Satan wherein He verbally expressed that one should worship the Lord God and Him Only shalt one serve (Luke 4:8). Jesus also came to serve man and He demonstrated this by washing His disciple’s feet and affirming that He (the Son of man) came not to be served but to serve (Matthew 20:28)

And as imitators of Jesus Christ (Ephesians 5:1) we are to do the same, seek the lost, save the lost and serve God and one another.

The questions that remain then are this! How are we to serve Serve God? and How are we to serve one another? The Scripture gives us the answer. We are to serve God with a perfect heart and a willing mind. (1 Chronicles 28:9) and we are to serve one another with humility as Jesus demonstrated by washing the feet of his disciples (John 13:1-14).

What is our attitude of servitude? Is it with a perfect heart, a willing mind and a humble Spirit?

1 Chronicles 28:9 (KJV)
9 And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.

John 13:14 (KJV)
14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.
