Christian Verbs :: T is for Teaching

As Christians we need to be teachers as was our Lord Jesus Christ. One the titles that was given to Jesus Christ, was that He was a teacher from God (John 3:2) and the people identified Him to be so, because they recognized that He could not do the miracle He did unless God was with Him. The Psalmist writes “Come my children, listen to me and I will teach you the fear of the Lord” (Psalm 34:11) which is the beginning of all wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). The last order before Jesus’ ascension known familiarly as the great commission starts with the instruction to first go and then teach as it reads “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost”. It also tells us that we need to teach the nations to observe God’s commandments, but we need to first recognize that in order for us to be like Jesus, teachers from God, we need to have God with and in us. And in the presence of sin, God cannot exist. So if we have any unconfessed sin in us, we need to first confess and repent. Only then can we be teachers. This is why King David repented and sought that the Lord restore unto him the joy of Salvation and uphold him (not cast down) with His freeing spirit, for only then, only then could he teach other sinners like himself, God’s ways (commandments) and sinner shall be converted unto God. (Psalm 51:12-13).

As Christians, we need to be teachers from God and of God, but before we embark on this mission, let us first examine our lives and seek God’s grace and mercy, confessing our willful sins, so that we can then teach others God’s ways. Praise God, that the steps of a  good man are ordered by the Lord and He delighted in His ways; though he falls, though he falls, He shall not be cast down for the Lord upholdeth him in His hands (Psalm 37:23-24)

Matthew 28:19-20 (KJV)
19
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Psalm 51:12-13 (KJV)
12
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.

19Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:20Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.19Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

20Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

What kind of a father is Jesus?

We all celebrated father’s day 2010 yesterday and I thank God for having granted me the privilege of being an earthly father to Reuben Abishai Paul (RAP). As I reminisced about father’s day, I was reminded of my own biological father, Dr. R.A.C. Paul,  who on the 30th day of September, 1986 passed away from this ephemeral world to enter into an eternal kingdom. And as my heart wandered to wonder about why I was deprived of a father-son relationship, I was promptly reminded from the scripture that God is the father of the fatherless (Psalm 68:5). Jesus Christ addressed Almighty God as Holy Father (John 17:11) while affirming that He and the Father are One  (John 10:30).

But what kind of a father is Jesus/God?

He is a
Friend of the sinner (Matthew 11:19),
Alpha/the First (Revelation 1:8),
Teacher from God (John 3:2),
Holy (Mark 1:24),
Emmanuel/With us (Matthew 1:23) and a
Rock (1 Corinthians 10:4) on whom we can depend.

And to all who believe and receive Jesus, He gave them the power to be called the sons of God (John 1:12) and because we have received the Spirit of adoption, we can call God, “Abba, Father” (Romans 8:15). Our relationship with God is that of a father-son relationship only because of our Spiritual Father, Jesus Christ; it is by adoption, and not by ancestry.

And as children of God, what kind of father’s do we need to be?
We need to be
1. the friends of those who are lost (who have not believed and accepted Jesus as their Lord and Father);
2. the first (alpha) to pass the baton of faith to our earthly children;
3. the teacher of the fear of the Lord;
4. holy as God the father is Holy;
5. always with and for our children and loved ones; and
6. the rock on which our children and loved ones can depend on.

John 1:12-13 (KJV)
12
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
13
Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Ephesians 6:4 (KJV)
4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

Jesus in the OT :: Deuteronomy

The book of Deuteronomy gives us a glimpse of who Jesus is in the Old Testament (O.T).

Deuteronomy 4:1 states Hearken O Israel, what I teach you for in doing them you will live and possess the land. Deuteronomy 4:9 states Pay attention (take heed) so you Keep you SOUL, and forget not from your MINDS what you have seen and guard your HEART. HEART, SOUL and MIND. Teach them to your sons, and to your son’s sons. For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop (Keeper or Overseer) of your souls. (1 Peter 2:25)

Jesus taught, you shall Love the LORD Your God, with ALL Your  HEART, and with all your SOUL and with all your MIND. (Matthew 22:37). Jesus Christ is the Teacher, come from God. The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. (John 3:2). Note, what Mary calls the resurrected Jesus, John 20:16 records that she calls Him Rabboni (which is Master or Teacher).

In Deuteronomy, Jesus is a Teacher; The Teacher from God.
