The Virgin Rebekah

It is highly likely that you have heard about virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, and most unlikely that you have heard about virgin Rebekah, the wife of Isaac. Yet, the Bible makes it explicit in the introduction of Rebekah, that she was a virgin and that no man had known her (Genesis 24:16), after being told that she was a very fair damsel. So what we see here is not only a description of this woman’s external appearance (complexion), but also her inner beauty i.e., she had kept herself pure. But what warrants such details? I believe, the virginity of Rebekah is mentioned, to not only show us her character, but also to assure us that God’s was sovereignly in control as Jesus Christ, the promised Seed of the woman (Genesis 3:15), the seed of Abraham (Galatians 3:16) was to come from the line of Abraham, as God has promised him, and there should be no question of his lineage.

Points to ponder:
God is always in control and his sovereignty in all aspects of our life is not only evident and explicit, if we seek to see it.

As the bride of Christ (the Church), we ought not to be only observed externally as being fair (spotless and clean) but internally we need to be pure, that is brought about solely by the salvation through faith in Jesus Christ and the sanctification of his Holy Spirit in our lives. As a church, we ought to be like virgin Rebekah, externally and internally pure.

Genesis 24:16 (KJV)
16 And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up.

The one question to ask God (Everyone)

When God tells Abram that he himself is his protector (shield) and provider (exceeding great reward), one would expect, to see Abram respond with gratitude, but the Bible records that instead of praise, Abram has a question for God. He question was “Lord God, what wilt thou give me?” and expressed his recognition of God’s awareness that he was childless. Abram was unsatisfied because he lacked the seed (a child) for his legacy to continue. All the things that he would get and amass would be futile when it could not be passed on. We would later see that God promises to Abram, the Seed, speaking of Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:16) through whom Abram’s name shall be made great and nations blessed. However, here let us focus on the question that Abram asked, which is what I believe, each one of us should ask … especially those who have not received Jesus, the Seed.

Points to ponder:
Let us be like Abram, unsatisfied, until we have received Jesus Christ, the Seed of the woman (Genesis 3:15), the Seed of Abram (Genesis 15:4-5), the promised Seed (Galatians 3:16). All the possessions and pleasures of the world amount to nothing, if we do not have Christ Jesus, the Seed, germinate in our lives, taking root in it and making us fruitful, so that nations can be blessed through us. If you have not received Jesus Christ, may your question be, “Lord God, what wilt thou give me?”

Genesis 15:2 (KJV)
And Abram said, Lord God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?

Nahum 3:19 – No healing of thy bruise

Nahum 3:19 reads “There is no healing of thy bruise; thy wound is grievous: all that hear the bruit of thee shall clap the hands over thee: for upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually?” The prophetic reference here is primarily to the ruler and king of Assyria, who was vile and whose officials were wicked men, sparring no mercy but pervasively and perpetually spreading their wickedness on all the nations they invaded and conquered. Essentially, the prophet Nahum, here is stating that the vile Assyrian and his nobles shall be bruised and wounded grievously that whoever shall hear of his destruction, shall rejoice with a clapping of their hands for the comfort that the Lord God has brought upon them.

Points to ponder:
Though in the physical realm, the reference to the vile Assyrian king is most likely to Sennacherib who blasphemed against the Lord, in the spiritual realm, prophet Isaiah refers to the devil as the evil Assyrian ruler (Isaiah 14:25) and his wickedness has not only been perpetual from the very beginning (John 8:44; 1 John 3:8), but also pervasive, so much so that whole creation groans (Romans 8:22) and all have fallen short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23). Even though the devil tried to destroy Jesus Christ, the Savior of all mankind, all he could do, was merely bruise the heel of Jesus with the nails that pierced his feet (Genesis 3:15), but Jesus once and for all grievously destroyed the devil (1 John 3:8) bruising the head of the wicked (evil) one, for which there is no healing (Genesis 3:15; Nahum 3:19) and laying him out bare from head to toe (Habakkuk 3:13), so that all who hear of the total shameful defeat of the devil by Jesus Christ, can rejoice for their liberty found in Christ (Galatians 2:4; 5:1), and rejoice always in the Lord (Philippians 4:4), with the clapping of hands.

 Nahum 3:19 (KJV)
19 There is no healing of thy bruise; thy wound is grievous: all that hear the bruit of thee shall clap the hands over thee: for upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually?

Genesis 3:14-15 (KJV)
14 And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

1 John 3:8 (KJV)
8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

Habakkuk 3:13 (KJV)
13 Thou wentest forth for the salvation of thy people, even for salvation with thine anointed; thou woundedst the head out of the house of the wicked, by discovering the foundation unto the neck. Selah.

Sow Christ Jesus

Once while traveling for work, in one of the airports, I came across an advertisement which caught my attention. It was the advertisement for the organization CARE (www.care.org) which aims at defending dignity and fighting poverty. The advertisement had in it a picture of an African woman with the following words, printed next to her – “She can plant the seeds of change. If she can get the seed.”

This social message has some serious undertones in our Christian life.  Christian have The Seed. Jesus Christ is The Seed. This is how He is referred to in the very first book of the Bible, much before His birth on earth. When man and woman sinned by disobeying God, because of the deception of satan, God declares war on satan, informing him of his impending doom, by expressing that God will put an enmity between satan and the woman and between the seed of satan (self-righteous; counterfeit believers) and the Seed of the woman (referring to Jesus Christ) who will crush the head of satan, while satan merely bruises His heel. (Genesis 3:15). At the Cross, satan bruised the heel of Jesus by nailing his feet, but by His sacrificial dying and by His resurrection from the dead, Jesus crushed the head of satan, totally defeating satan and the power of death that he had.

Just as a seed germinates and brings forth life, in the soil that receives it,  so does Jesus germinate and brings forth eternal life in all who receive Him. Jesus Christ is The Seed that changes death to life; He is The Seed that brings life. But how can one plant when they don’t have The Seed, themselves? This is a stark reminder for all those who have The Seed (Jesus), that they ought to sow Jesus Christ in someone else.

Point(s) to ponder:

Do you have Jesus Christ; The Seed? If not, receive Him with a fertile heart, so He can bring you life! and if you do, Sow Jesus Christ in someone who does not have Him.

Genesis 3:15 (KJV)
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
